From what I've read about this phenom, this is more of a cultural/religious/tribal event that carries more of a symbolic meaning than traditional marriage does.

In cases of this, it seems that the person is usually poor and suffering from some illness which the animal (who is revered in the culture) is supposed to cure. The person can go on to marry an actual human later and not have to go through a regular divorce or anything...

So, while we think it weird, it's apparently not to this culture...

I joke with my husband that Edison Melody is my second husband all the time. He takes it with a good humor.

I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with her marrying a cobra as long as the cobra doesn't get health insurance

The joke is supposed to be COBRA = acronym for a kind of health insurance.

what about the one who married a dog! i love animals but isn't that taking it a bit too far.

Thee was a documentary about a man in the US (I believe. Can't quite remember. It WAS a few years ago. :P) who married his horse a few years ago.
