Ok let me start from the beginning and than I do have a question I need answered to if any can help with it. Ok last August we went on vacation and find a kitten on the beach where he was just a stray cuz we asked to make sure he didn’t belong to any1 there, so we drive him with us for 14 hours back home with us. We kept in the house with us for a week or so and than he was an out and inside cat, which worked really well until in april of this yr. He was gone for over a month, we talked to anyone and called the shelter and put a note in the mailbox so the mailman knew we were missing him. My boys and myself would cry and yell and yell everyday.

So one we past the mailman and ask him if he had seen any sign of our island, he said he saw one up of the hill from where we lived, so myself and my husband went the next day and stop to ask on the hill above us if anyone had seen him. Then we got this story about people moved out up there and left this cat, and that he had got hit with a car and he was a black and white just like our island was. Just by chance it was close to where my aunt lived so I went to talk to her and believe I was shaking and crying talking to her and than she said that the lady next door did have a cat that fight my cat to a tee, so we went next door and talk to them and they called for pepper and it was my island , and than she showed my pics of his face when he was hurt, got hit in the head and his face was messed up, she took him to the vet(which I thank god she did) and also got him fixed the same time they had him put under for fixing his nose and other in the face. So me and my husband asked how much did it all cost and that we would pay for the vet bill, and they wasn’t sure that they wanted to give us our cat back, but I am not one that just have animals to have them they r part of my family, plus my boys would see that prayers are answered and miricles do happen once in awhile. So we informed them that we would be back for island in a few, so we went home got the money to pay them for his vet bill and took our boys(4 and 13 yrs) and drove back up to their house which we didn’t tell the boys what we were doing, so as soon as they saw him they both broke down crying and my little one kept asking is that my I. (short for island which we call him that) we called him that because we were on top sail island when we got him.

So never give up hope and pray tha if something would happen to ur cat that they would find someone special like island did to help them we wasn’t there for him.

Ok now here is my question hoping u all can help me with this. Since he got hit in the head and stayed in their house to recup after his ordeal, he was in and out of their house which is only 100 yards up the hill from my house but he never came home. I have kept in the house since we brought him home, but he loves to go out and yells to go out, but I am scared to let him out thinking he might go up the hill again. I have heard that cats have a memory of 14 days , does anyone know for a fact if this is true, and if not how long should I keep him in the house. He is fixed now which makes me think he should stay close to home now. I really want to let him go outside without me hover over him like I have, he doesnt run away from me and does come to me when I call him, just afraid to let him go without me, he does remember his name and loves us just like old times, with sleeping with us and the boys. Any help would be greatly accepted. Never give up and pray!!!!!!!!!!

You haven't mentioned once in the whole story whether he's been neutered or not. That can make all the difference. It's natural for cats, especially males, to roam outside, and he'll do it, or want to do it, if he's not fixed. He may want to do it for a while afterward too, but at least you'll have done the right thing to begin with. Also, after it's done, so he can still get outside a bit and eat grass and have some fresh air, buy a harness with straps that go around his neck and tummy (safer than just a neck collar) and gradually get him used to wearing it (without the leash part) in the house for short times - it should be tight enough so you can just get 1 finger comfortably underneath without forcing. Then take him outside and walk him around with the leash attached. He may not 'walk' like a dog, but eventually will do so, and have a chance to sniff everything and check out his 'territory' (which is another strong instinct) and still be safe.

I wasn't able to read this post. I WANTED to, but capitalizing the first letter in every word makes it way too hard on these old eyes to read. Sorry.

I didn't read much of it either, but I think you are asking if you should let your cat back out after he's run away.
I would either build him an enclosure or harness train, why risk having him run off again or any of the other bad things that can happen outdoors.

I think that TCS changes the words to this when people post in all caps.

Actually, she did say that the person who took him to the vet got him fixed at the same time.

Bellairefan, I am so happy you got your cat back! Your post was a little hard to read. I know you were very excited when you posted.
Its not wrong to let your kitty out, but it is riskier. You have to weigh the pros and cons. Personally, our cats are indoor only.

What is your cats name?

You can get outdoor enclosures and cat fences, you can get a large tent that you can see out of for him to play in with a litterbox and toys and stuff, or you can take him outside on a harness. If he already got hit by a car once, I wouldn't let him back outside at all by himself.

in a pile of open toed shoes!
ok, this is just IMO, but he got hit by a car right?! And had serious injury? And some kind soul was nice enough to take him to a vet, have the surgery done, get him fixed, and pay for it? If he wanders off again, chances are your not gonna have another good samaratin who'll shell out the $ it costs for all of that necessary expenses. He'll eventually get used to being indoors only. It's a learned thing. And do the enclosures, or get the leash. There's no way I'd take a 2nd chance like that with my baby. And make sure you give him extra play time inside to make up for the wandering free time. Good luck to you & your family!

I agree with Jen completely. There are ways to allow Island time "outside" without putting him at risk of running off again. Especially since the little guy has had such trauma, I'd be careful not to let him out of my sight again!
