I just read another thread and she mentioned that she was waiting for her mama cat milk to dry up. Do they need to be dry when they get spayed? Her kittens are almost 8 weeks old and she is only nursing them once or twice a day. Most times they just eat dry kitten food and drink water. I am trying to make an appointment now that I have found a place that I can afford.

Contact the clinic and ask what their policies are...the feral cat clinic I volunteer at does spay cats that are still lactating..so it can be done.

I had a stray cat spayed while she was still lactating because I didn't know any better. The vet told me it was MUCH harder on her than it would have been if her milk had been dried up. If possible please wait until her milk dries up.

Cece, my calico foster will be spayed next week and she is still nursing. She nurses all the kittens (ones that aren't hers) and the puppy. They said it can be a little touchy but they do it anyway.

Most of my foster moms go into the local clinic still lactating. I have never had a problem. I even have a few kittens that will still nurse on mom once she is spayed. This clinic does thousands a year and has never had a problem doing lactating moms.

Missy was still lactating when she was spayed and it wasn't a problem. It just depends on what your vet is comfortable with.

The best answer to this question is from your vet. He can tell you what is done, how it is done, the after-care needs and any risks associated. It is always best to discuss your options with a trusted health-care partner.
