How Messy is the Birth Process?

I'm am still trying to do some finishing touches on my master closet where I plan to let Ruby deliver. I am considering purchasing an indoor/outdoor carpet to lay in the closet to avoid ruining my carpet (my house is brand new and I pride myself that with two toddlers in the house, I am stain free after 1.5 months).

Basically, I want to know if a thick layer of blankets will suffice, or if I should go for an entire layer of carpet that can be disposed of after the kittens go to new homes.

Yes the blankets will be perfect... That is what I did and Skittles had 13 babies... There was a mess but I tried to remove all towels quickly so as not to seep thru... On the carpet I had a towel and then placed 4 puppy pads stuck together then a towel over all that and then the nesting stuff... Skittles loved it and nother made it to the pads but there was a lot of blood...

Missy had 5 kittens, there was not much mess at all it didn't even seep through one folded towel. Hardly any blood either. I think each cat is different and it depends on how many kittens.

Yea that should do it. Just make sure she is doing what she is spose to be doing i.e. cleaning the kittens etc. And make sure the placenta sacs are opening. Me and my husband had to assist our cat through the birthing process. But most cats can handle it themselves.

If you can find an inexpensive carpet I would do that. Adina had 5 kittens and she pawed at the towels and blankets I put down. She made a nice little nest on the carpet and surrounded herself with the towels. I have a rather large blood stain on my carpet. She had a messy birth.
