Ok I leave dry food out ALL day for my cats and since the preg. one won't really eat the kitten food (same brand) I have started just mixing the kitten food with the reg. food to at least get some in her (but the other cats get it too) and I mix the kitten dry in with the wet to get her some more that way.

But anyways. She does eat the dry food all day but she also snacks on my dogs dry food (funny since they are HUGE dogs and one used to be food aggressive, we have since worked on that, but she has always shared with this one cat and they are buddies. LOL). Will this harm her or her kittens? She has always snacked on the dog food along with her own and been find but was more worried for the kittens since she is preg..........

Strange question. LOL And yes their food dish is full so it isn't that she doesn't have food or is hungry. She actually just snacked on a bit of dog food about 1/2 hr ago and about 5 min came down to eat some of hers. LOL so she is eating the cat food too.

I keep unlimited food out for my cats and dogs, too. My kitties occasionally snitch dog food, but I know it is not good for them. I really don't think it is ok for a preggers kitty to eat dog food...the fat content is just too low.

Maybe you can switch the dogs to set mealtimes until the kittens are weaned?

Kitty ate some of Valorie's (my dog) food when she was preg. and she was fine. (not saying it is good cuz Beckiboo is right) i tried to pull her away from it and show her, her food but she snacked on the dogs food and the dog would snack on her food.

my dogs would be a MESS with a set meal time. LOL the only time we did that was when house breaking and that was 5 yrs ago for one and 10 yrs ago for the other. LOL She doesn't eat a ton just a few peices here and there and is eating her food often. And I give her wet food 1-2 times a day with some of the dry kitten food.

My dogs wouldn't know what to do with set meal times for the next 3-4 mo! as Angel still has 4 weeks left in her preg.......

will it really harm them as long as she eats her food also? wish she has been eating her food non stop (no not really but eats it often throughout the day).

my dog used to CHOW the cats food! he would eat their whole free feeder bowl of it! so that is now down in the basement where the dogs do not go. Same with the litter box as my dogs were fond of that too! ICK!

yeah if Kitty does not finish her wet food valorie sits and waits for Kitty to finish and as soon as she does, Val dives into Kitty's bowel and eats the thing in like 3 seconds flat.

I don't know if it is really harmful, maybe you should call the vet and check Monday.

My dog likes catfood, too, so for a while I kept the food in a large carrier facing the wall. Easy for the cats to get into, but not the dog. Now I just keep a bucket of legos next to the kitty food, as a little reminder to Misty not to eat cat food!

Maybe pick up the dogs bowls several times a day. That way they have certain times they can eat, and others when they can't. (When my cats are getting greedy with my dog's food, I shut it in a closet. Then she can ask for it if she is hungry, otherwise she gets it once a day!)

It's bad for them. Here is what I found:

http://cats.about.com/od/catfoodfaqs...oodforcats.htm

Q. If you feed cats dogfood, can it cause them to go blind?

I know it's a strange question, but I've read that dog food is harmful for cats. It looks and smells much like cat food and my cats seem to like eating it when we run out of cat food.
A. It's not a strange question at all. There's nothing in dog food that will directly harm a cat within a short period of time, but the point is what is lacking. Simply put, dog food does not provide the nutrients required by cats. Eating a little bit of dog food won't kill a cat. But a cat fed exclusively on dog food can not only go blind, but can develop a heart condition, called feline dilated cardiomyopathy.
The difference primarily is taurine, found in muscle meat, heart, and liver. Studies have also been done that showed pregnancy failure in queens with long-term taurine depletion, including increased resorption of fetuses, reduced litter size, and increased incidence of stillborn kittens.
I would never suggest feeding cats dog food, but rather food specifically formulated for their own, unique nutritional needs

A few bites of dog food will certainly not be harmful. However, it is much too low in protein to be a good diet for a pregnant cat. As long as she is eating enough kitten or all life stages cat food, though, a bit of dog food won't hurt.

As long as she's eating more of the kitten/cat food and only snacking on a piece or two of the dog's food, its fine, but dog food doesn't have enough protein in it to be heathy in the long run.

What kind of dogs do you have that don't eat all of their food when you put it in the bowl? I have a lab and she never leaves food in the bowl when she's fed twice a day.

my dogs are free fed basically, My hubby normally fed them and then his hours have been LONG at work and I noticed a couple mornings that they weren't fed at night and felt HORRIBLE, I just didn't think of it when hubby was working 12-13hrs a day since I was used to him doing it, so I got a self feeder last week and figured I would watch and make sure they weren't going through it too fast. But even before that we would fill their bowls and they would eat and have some left for the next a.m. and finish that during the day. They are used to food being in their bowls so they just "snack" off and on through out the day.

I have a 1/2 lab 1/2 rottie that is about 105-110lbs (he is a big boy) and a teeny rottie female that is about 85lbs.

Yes she mainly eats her premium (I switched cat foods after reading these boards.
) cat and kitten food (she won't eat the kitten alone so been mixing both the adult and kitten so my other cats dont' get all kitten. But going to start putting her in my room as soon as a get a mattress cover for my waterbed. LOL (which is where she will be to have her kittens) and having her kitten food in there. And her wet food and only snacks on a couple peices of dog food here and there. So she is getting the nutrients from her food.
