Byron ran away 14 days ago. He's about a year old, but I've only had him for three months. His time here was wonderful though, and I dont understand why he hasnt come home yet.

I saw him for the first week or so, but lately, only the neighbors have reported seeing him run by... I'm wondering if it's time to put up the signs. I miss him terribly, and dont know if I should give up or not.

Is two weeks a long time for a cat to be gone? What should my next step be? I have a cat trap in the back yard set up, but I just keep catching the neighbor's cat.

Any ideas? Please, and reassurances too... would make me feel so much better.

I am so sorry to hear that!!!

My best friend's cat was gone for 2 weeks once, because she was angry at her for going on vacation for 3 weeks. So maybe something just bugged him?!
I am personally not an expert on cats that roam around, but I would put up signs...just to be safe!

Good luck! And don't give up just yet! There is always hope!

I would put up signs and check any local shelters to see if someone dropped him off. Do you let your cat outside normally? Is he fixed? It is breeding season so.... he may have ran after another cat

OK LET ME START FROM THE BEGINING AND THAN I DO HAVE A QUESTION I NEED ANSWERED TO IF ANY CAN HELP WITH IT. OK LAST AUGUST WE WENT ON VACATION AND FIND A KITTEN ON THE BEACH WHERE HE WAS JUST A STRAY CUZ WE ASKED TO MAKE SURE HE DIDNT BELONG TO ANY1 THERE, SO WE DRIVE HIM WITH US FOR 14 HOURS BACK HOME WITH US. WE KEPT IN THE HOUSE WITH US FOR A WEEK OR SO AND THAN HE WAS AN OUT AND INSIDE CAT, WHICH WORKED REALLY WELL UNTIL IN APRIL OF THIS YR. HE WAS GONE FOR OVER A MONTH, WE TALKED TO ANYONE AND CALLED THE SHELTER AND PUT A NOTE IN THE MAILBOX SO THE MAILMAN KNEW WE WERE MISSING HIM. MY BOYS AND MYSELF WOULD CRY AND YELL AND YELL EVERYDAY.

SO ONE WE PAST THE MAILMAN AND ASK HIM IF HE HAD SEEN ANY SIGN OF OUR ISLAND, HE SAID HE SAW ONE UP OF THE HILL FROM WHERE WE LIVED, SO MYSELF AND MY HUSBAND WENT THE NEXT DAY AND STOP TO ASK ON THE HILL ABOVE US IF ANYONE HAD SEEN HIM. THEN WE GOT THIS STORY ABOUT PEOPLE MOVED OUT UP THERE AND LEFT THIS CAT, AND THAT HE HAD GOT HIT WITH A CAR AND HE WAS A BLACK AND WHITE JUST LIKE OUR ISLAND WAS. JUST BY CHANCE IT WAS CLOSE TO WHERE MY AUNT LIVED SO I WENT TO TALK TO HER AND BELIEVE I WAS SHAKING AND CRYING TALKING TO HER AND THAN SHE SAID THAT THE LADY NEXT DOOR DID HAVE A CAT THAT FIGHT MY CAT TO A TEE, SO WE WENT NEXT DOOR AND TALK TO THEM AND THEY CALLED FOR PEPPER AND IT WAS MY ISLAND
, AND THAN SHE SHOWED MY PICS OF HIS FACE WHEN HE WAS HURT, GOT HIT IN THE HEAD AND HIS FACE WAS MESSED UP, SHE TOOK HIM TO THE VET(WHICH I THANK GOD SHE DID) AND ALSO GOT HIM FIXED THE SAME TIME THEY HAD HIM PUT UNDER FOR FIXING HIS NOSE AND OTHER IN THE FACE. SO ME AND MY HUSBAND ASKED HOW MUCH DID IT ALL COST AND THAT WE WOULD PAY FOR THE VET BILL, AND THEY WASNT SURE THAT THEY WANTED TO GIVE US OUR CAT BACK, BUT I AM NOT ONE THAT JUST HAVE ANIMALS TO HAVE THEM THEY R PART OF MY FAMILY, PLUS MY BOYS WOULD SEE THAT PRAYERS ARE ANSWERED AND MIRICLES DO HAPPEN ONCE IN AWHILE. SO WE INFORMED THEM THAT WE WOULD BE BACK FOR ISLAND IN A FEW, SO WE WENT HOME GOT THE MONEY TO PAY THEM FOR HIS VET BILL AND TOOK OUR BOYS(4 AND 13 YRS) AND DROVE BACK UP TO THEIR HOUSE WHICH WE DIDNT TELL THE BOYS WHAT WE WERE DOING, SO AS SOON AS THEY SAW HIM THEY BOTH BROKE DOWN CRYING AND MY LITTLE ONE KEPT ASKING IS THAT MY I. (SHORT FOR ISLAND WHICH WE CALL HIM THAT) WE CALLED HIM THAT BECAUSE WE WERE ON TOP SAIL ISLAND WHEN WE GOT HIM.

SO NEVER GIVE UP HOPE AND PRAY THA IF SOMETHING WOULD HAPPEN TO UR CAT THAT THEY WOULD FIND SOMEONE SPECIAL LIKE ISLAND DID TO HELP THEM WE WASNT THERE FOR HIM.

OK NOW HERE IS MY QUESTION HOPING U ALL CAN HELP ME WITH THIS. SINCE HE GOT HIT IN THE HEAD AND STAYED IN THEIR HOUSE TO RECUP AFTER HIS ORDEAL, HE WAS IN AND OUT OF THEIR HOUSE WHICH IS ONLY 100 YARDS UP THE HILL FROM MY HOUSE BUT HE NEVER CAME HOME. I HAVE KEPT IN THE HOUSE SINCE WE BROUGHT HIM HOME, BUT HE LOVES TO GO OUT AND YELLS TO GO OUT, BUT I AM SCARED TO LET HIM OUT THINKING HE MIGHT GO UP THE HILL AGAIN. I HAVE HEARD THAT CATS HAVE A MEMORY OF 14 DAYS , DOES ANYONE KNOW FOR A FACT IF THIS IS TRUE, AND IF NOT HOW LONG SHOULD I KEEP HIM IN THE HOUSE. HE IS FIXED NOW WHICH MAKES ME THINK HE SHOULD STAY CLOSE TO HOME NOW. I REALLY WANT TO LET HIM GO OUTSIDE WITHOUT ME HOVER OVER HIM LIKE I HAVE, HE DOESNT RUN AWAY FROM ME AND DOES COME TO ME WHEN I CALL HIM, JUST AFRAID TO LET HIM GO WITHOUT ME, HE DOES REMEMBER HIS NAME AND LOVES US JUST LIKE OLD TIMES, WITH SLEEPING WITH US AND THE BOYS. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY ACCEPTED. NEVER GIVE UP AND PRAY!!!!!!!!!!

It's a story like that that makes me feel a little bit better.

Byron isnt fixed, so that helps me feel a little better about him. He also seems to be very street smart... But I cant help but feel like giving up or something. No sign of him for the last week... I just dont understand how he can abandon his family like this.

He got a LOT of love while he was here, but do you think it's possible for him to forget where he lives because he was only with us for 3 months?

Rosie

ps: I'm going to make signs.

About the mail man... I think I read that in another story too. That's a great suggestion. Thank you

Sometimes sprinkling the dirty catlitter around the house can make it easier to find home, it is breeding season- he's probably out chasing girls-horomones win over hearth and home everytime
. My fixed female just came home tonight
(-thank you Lord, an answer to prayer!) after being gone for about 5 days, so he will probably come home soon if that's what he's doing. The mailman is a good suggestion, when my dog went missing one afternoon (not the current dog, she's hard to miss
!), I asked the guy with the icecream truck if he had seen him or if he did, if he could let me know. They drive slow and are always having to look out for little kids
.
I will pray he comes home soon, and I would get him fixed really soon, or else you will be doing this again next time (probably around the end of summer, beginning of fall)
.

The encouragement helps. I have borrowed a cat trap from a really nice lady in town, and he just wont go to it. Yesterday I changed the food in it, but this morning, it was closed, and no one was inside it...

I'm going to change the food again (The fresher it is, the more it draws attention it seems. I've caught the neighbor's cat twice) tonight. But if he isnt home tomorrow... Then I'm going to really worry.

I almost feel like he's died or something... And I dont watn to think the worst... But I am having such a hard time believing otherwise. It sounds SO stupid... but I've become depressed over it.

It seems like I dont want to do anything anymore, just wait for byron. I feel like if he just came home... My life would be perfect again.

>.<

It's not stupid- I was really surprised at how much it affected me when Meggie went missing this time (it's happened before
). Just try to remember that God knows where he is and he created him and cares about him (and you), so whatever happens, it will be alright.
(and being just people, sometimes we just don't understand
).

It's very sweet of you to say. Every time my heart losers a bit, I just read this thread for comfort.

You know what's weird... I have this cat trap, and every morning, it is closed, but no cat inside... Do you think he/or the neighbor's cat is jumping on top of the cage to set it off or something? I mean, byron is smart enough for that... but not the neighbor's animal.

Any ideas? I'm getting tired of this trap anyway... Just a disapointment >.<

Either that, or you may have smart racoons around
. Our neighbors' down the street had one (a big, fat one!) we would see sneaking into their garage at night through a tiny cat door. I suspect that's where the cat food was.
If it's not alot of trouble, I would keep it as long as you can, just in case. Can you move it to another part of the yard?

I do hope you catch your cat!

As for the empty trap every morning, I bet it's one of two things: Either the cat or some other animal is standing outside of the cage, behind it, sticking theitr paw in and eating the food that way or else it's getting inside the trap, just enough to eat-leaning over the lever that makes the door shut.

But it's ok, I also have solutions!!! Try covering the trap, anything from a sheet, to a towel will work, just over the back half of it, you still want the cat to smell the food, but not be able to reach it by sticking it's paws in and fishing the food out. For cat's that stretch over the lever, or stand back just enough so that the lever isn't activated, take a peice of cardboard, just enough to fit between the things that hold the lever up, and about 6 inches long, and stick it on the lever, so that if the cat steps on the cardboad, it will activate the lever to close the cage.

Good luck, and if I didn't explain this clearly, tell me and I will go out tomorrow and take pictures of what I am talking about.
