Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good wesite for disciplining your cat!

My Boyfriend believe's in giving Jackson trouble when he does something bad, and I on the other hand don't like it and wont do it, and so I though if we do need to discpilin Jackson... I want to do it the right way!

Any information you know of would be GREATLY appreciated!

What do you mean your bf "gives him trouble"?? I certainly hope that doesn't mean a physical punishment. No animal should ever be punished physically.

What does Jackson do that is bad? List individual things and hopefully a solution can be found!

I used to squirt Ginger with a water spray bottle - it worked great, and at 11 months old she knows the rules and generally stays within them.

She did push the boundaries a few times, as any good little kitten should, but she wound up with a bath for her troubles!

With cats, you do positive reinforcement. Negative reinforcement (i.e. punishment) only associates the bad feelings with you. Are there specific behaviors that are causing issues?

Never Physical, Dave is great with Jackson....
Dave will use a spray bottle, But I don't think it's necessary...I would like to do something different...Like make a loud noise to get his attention...I'm lost!

Jackson will do things like;

Eat the plants...
Scratches your feet
Gets into the laundry basket and russsels around in there...sometimes tearing up clothes...
But he looks so cute...

Not horrible stuff, just something that we would like him to stop doing...

We play ALOT with him, he gets alot of attention...were just trying to find out what we can do so the little man doesn't get hurt, or in trouble.

We would NEVER hit Jackson...Maybe a squirt or a clap of the hands...thats all!

Oh, okay! Good!

I use a spray bottle on my cats when they jump on the table or counters. I don't have a better solution. I guess you could try a can with pennies in it. Just say 'NO' and shake the can whenever Jackson is doing something you don't like. Hopefully he'll associate 'No' with being startled and eventually you won't need the can.

Some plants are poisonous to cats!!!

My Gary is a stubborn little brat! He knows he's not allowed on the counter but he gets up there almost daily. I clap, tell him to get down, slap my hand on the counter right next to him, etc. and he just looks at me. He knows I won't do a thing to hurt him so he takes full advantage of that! LOL!

At least Grace jumps down when she hears me coming... not Gary. He just doesn't care!

I'm envious of the people who can clap and get their cats to listen!!!

Didn't anyone ever tell you - cats are like kids - they have selective hearing and there's no medication/treatment for it.

One of those problems you might not need to use discipline for. My cat was eating houseplants and spraying Bitter Apple on them stopped it completely. He still will occasionally try -- he opens his mouth and puts it around the leaf, then instantly walks away. Lately I've seen him getting up high to try and find fronds that don't taste bad... no luck!

Ginger likes the taste of that stuff
so it didn't work for me - we went back to the spray bottle, LOL!

To get him to stop nibbling your plants, you can try planting him some cat grass. Trust me, he will love it. Cats seem to crave green stuff.

You can also try making a sharp hissing sound at him when he's doing something you don't want, like tsssssst! This works for Polly.
