We have had our cat Kitty for almost 2 years now. We think she belonged to the people who live across from us but she decided that she wanted to live here with us, we never bothered to send her home because she looked so skinny and frail. She is very affectionate and loves to cuddle. Approx 5 months ago we brought home a new cat, not knowing the proper procedure we showed Kitty the new cat in the box and she completely freaked out. So we kept the new cat locked up in one bedroom and followed the proper procedure of how to introduce them but nothing has helped, whenever they are in the same room Kitty attacks and hurts the new cat Neve. We are still letting them smell each other through a crack in the door but I can not go near Kitty when she either sees or smells Neve, she has attacked me twice already. Its so bad that I am too scared to even pet her, lying on my lap is a big no no as I am scared she will bite me again, which hurts very much by the way. Neither of the cats have been spayed and Neve has had kittens, I am so scared that someone will leave a door open and Kitty will kill the kittens. Is it possibe that she will take to the kittens? I think she is about 5 years old and has never had kittens, Im wondering if she will accept the little kittens or do you think it is a bad idea to try and introduce them. She is very territorial only when it comes to female cats, weve come home some nights to find atleast 3 stray male cats with her in the house.
So basically what I would like to know is "What else can we do? We love Kitty very much but she is hardly getting any attention and she is starting to look worse for the wear.... I cant get rid of my new cat, I am totally in love with her. We wont keep the kittens and will have the new cat spayed soon.
The reason we have not had them spayed yet is because my boyfriend said that it was quite an ordeal, he had one of his cats spayed a long time ago and he says its like preparing a family member for surgery and that the entire thing is quite unpleasant, is this true. How certain can we be that Kitty will calm down and accept the new cat if we spay her.
I read else where in this forum where someone recommended putting orange juice on both the cats so they smell the same, does this work?
I know there are many websites that give advice and Ive probably read abd followed all their instructions, but nothing seems to help, Im in a real pickle here as I would really like my children to get along. They both have extremely playful natures and I think given a chance they could be best friends.
