Luckily, no one in my immediate family has ever been bit, but we see our fair share around. When I was living in the dorms, two girls got bitten in two days. One was the star of the girls basketball team, and much of her upper right thigh rotted out. The exterminators came in and wiped everything out and we never had that issue again.

Our biggest concern at our house is the copperhead. We found one in the driveway and killed it in our first 3 weeks in this house.

YES i let big hairy spiders run around my home cos they hunt down all the nasties, if i see one i will snap a shot for you all to see but its winter now and they hibernate,,maybe i could send some over to you all

i could not help myself i had to get this for you

this guy is just hanging about under the guttering its about the same size i get here
OMG! I think those are even uglier than my recluses!!!

Theres only one exterminator here in town, I think I'll call him Monday. My Aunt said that they had them in their house too and had it sprayed but they just kept coming back.
Lowes has some stuff you spray around the baseboards that is supposed to kill any creepy crawlies and its supposed to be safe for pets and kids to be around....anyone tried it??

Maybe thats what I need to do....just buy some bigger non-poisonous spiders to eat the recluses!!!

Caught two in the glue traps last night. Thats at least two that can't bite us anymore!!

And yes, I am fully aware of the dangers of these spiders, I've been around them my whole life. Believe me, we're doing full body checks on everyone every morning. If anyone gets bit, we're gonna know!! Now to get ahold of the exterminator...

I sat and watched one not too long back it was on my ceiling so I couldn't reach it and I watched it crawl down the wall and on my bed as soon as it got on the headboard I smashed it. Cruel I know but I don't want one of them in my bed and my girls sleep in my bed. I was telling a friend about it and he said I shouldn't have killed it. He said well if you get bit then you just do its not his fault its just an animal. True enough its a critter but I have to protect myself and my kitty and my dog. I say call a professional. I would but its not my house here.

I'm sorry, but with all due respect to your friend, if something that will hurt my family or pets comes into my home, it dies. Bottom line. No questions asked, no remorse. It dies.

I'm so sorry you have to deal with these. I had never heard of them before so looked them up online - gee they look scary and are so dangerous. That was a nasty bite that your hubby got. I hope that he gets better soon and that you manage to clear your home of them.

He's also the same friend who loves cats but says I should "get rid" of my dog because he doesn't like them. He says he would never be mean to one but he says they repulse him. Which is fine he is entitled to his opinion but I happen to love my dog and she's not going anywhere.

Well guys...managed to get ahold of the only exterminator that services my area (small town) and they want to charge me 250 dollars to come and get rid of them!!! We just can't afford that right now! I guess we're going to get some bug bombs and stuff for the baseboards and yard and evacuate the house for a couple of days. This should be fun. Sheesh.

we get Brown Recluses too. one was on my face one time but it didnt bite me thank god. *shiver*

its your house so do what you want but i have heard that those chemicals can cause perminent brain damage even if you stay out of the house for a few days and they can harm your animals (and shrink male genitals).

My sister is Chemically sensitive so i know alot about harmful chemicals in pesticides and believe me... its bettr to stay away from the chemicals

my friends mom sprayed their house one time and now my friend is perminently brain damaged and on the brink of death.

there are these things you can get called Rid-X and you plug them in and they make a high pitched noise that animals like cats and dogs and humans can't hear but spiders and rodents and bugs can and they dont like it so they stay away. my friend sleeps in his basement and he used to get the little buggers all the time but he got one of those and he hasnt seen one since. The only drawback is that you cannot own hamsters or the like.

another alternitive to the chemicals are Geko's. we used to buy geko's and we would never see spiders. ( i have no idea how to spell Geko by the way)

They are indeed poisonous. Very. I see them daily in my basement, and when they are on a nonflammable surface, I burn them with a propane torch. It is a clean, environmentally friendly way, and safe as long as I am careful.

You don't have a BIG pest control company that services several towns? I had a terrible time with fleas so I got a big company who serices several cities in my county and I pay $80.00 every other month!

I HAD to as Panther LOVES playing with spiders!

I HATE spiders... No matter how small... My husband is a roofer also and they have to be careful doing tear-offs because the spiders are all over the old wood

My husband had gotten bitten once by a brown recluse. He had to get it excised. It got really nasty and swollen, filled with pus.

If I'm not mistaken it cause the skin to get necrotic.

It is a big pest control company--Terminix. Its the best rates they will give me even though I have a termite contract with them. You would think you could get a discount. I guess they can charge what they want considering they are the only ones around.

JESSIEnKITTY--I've never heard of these chemicals causing brain damage or death as long as you follow label directions, but I appriciate the tip and I will definately do my research before I buy anything.

The Rid-X things sound great, but we do have a Hampster, and pet Mice, so I doubt that they would be the right choice for us.

I guess I'll research some things and see what I can find out. I can find lots of info about the spiders and their bites but not much info on what to do to get rid of them.

I feel for you. Megan is constantly just looking and waiting for spiders and bugs and brings them up from the basement. I freak out because we have many spiders here similar in appearance to brown recluse . I can't tell the difference and it just freaks me out.
