Hello, in the past hour my cat has starting very oddly.
She was up on the kitchen worktops which she normally does but then right in front of me she started to take a wee on my peg bag. This is despite her litter tray being a very short distance away. So I picked her up and put her in her litter tray, she sat there for a while looking as if she was straining. After that she proceeded to go to her cat basket and wee again. She has now have lots of wees all around the kitchen and has taking to sitting on her side as she does this. Each wee is very short and she then licks herself after having done it. Unfortunately though she is wetting herself and her fur on one side seems to be all damp. She is an indoor cat.

I have remembered smelling cat wee twice over the past week but I didn't think anything of it then. And it was only twice, unlike what seems to be happening at the moment.

Any ideas as to what she is doing she is about 12 years old.

Peeing outside the litterbox is often a sign the your kitty has a UTI or blockage. Therefore a vet visit is definitely in order. Especially if she's straining when you put her in the litterbox. If she does have a UTI or blockage, she see the box as what's causing her pain, so she goes elsewhere.

After you get her checked out by a vet, check out this thread on inappropriate peeing. You'll find lots of information on how to get her to use the litterbox again.

SHe definitely has some sort of Urinary Track problem - possibly an Infection which needs treatment from VET.

Please have her checked!

Thank you for your responses, does a UTI tie in with the few wees she had before tonight or is that a separate thing? between the two wee smells she was using the litter tray fine. Also it's nearing 1am so I can't get her to a vet for several hours yet is there anything you can recommend to make the night more comfortable for her?

Absolutely - UTIs do not appear over night they slowely develop over time. Taking her to the VET ASAP is the best thing you do for her.

Please keep us in the loop on how she is doing!

Ok, erm, so what do you think I can do to help her tonight then? Is it at all likely to go away on its own (not that I don't want to take to the vets I'm just curious, in case I didn't notice it as it was rare for me to of been down at that time and I'm wondering what if?)

I agree that it could be a URI and a vet visit is in order. When cats start doing things out of the ordinary, it usually is a signal that something is wrong and they are sick/not feeling well. The probably will need antibiotics to clear up the URI. Please see your vet sooner than later.

You may also want to ask them to do a senior panel on her due to her age.

Ditto

If you are hesitant about traveling to the vet many will come to you ../.

Can't think of anything you can do for her tonight - sorry. Itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s important that you her to a veterinarian, as UTIâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s can be dangerous (remember it is infection that can travel within the body) if left untreated and no they ussually DO NOT resolve on their own and most likely will require treatment with antibiotics.

As we are not Vets we are only advising from experience - your Vet will make the final diagnosis and provide the best treatment.

Bottom line - She has problem that needs the attention of a VET especially her being a semior!

Please let us know how she is doing.

I agree that it sounds like a UTI, and she really needs to be seen by a vet tonight, since she is straining. If she develops a blockage, it can be life-threatening, not to mention more expensive to treat than if she is treated now.

If it turns out not to be a UTI, please have the vet do a senior panel (blood work). While the symptoms sound more like a UTI, other disorders (diabetes, chronic renal failure, and hyperthyroidism) can all cause increased urination and peeing outside the litter box.

I would get the vet asap. A cat can die in 48 hours from a blockage. An infection left alone can spread to other organs. Is your kitty male or female? My male kitty and surgery from all his blockages. He doesn't have any male parts left. We call him a he/she. Is there any blood in the wee? Also check the belly by the hips for what feels like a little ballon. That would be a full bladder. Good Luck
