Here in Los Angeles, we have one small community that has almost banned smoking all together. It's getting crazy out there these days. In the community of Calabassas in the Northern San Fernando Valley, you can't even smoke OUTSIDE! I'm not sure if you can smoke in your car, but I know that you can't even go outside and have a cigarette. All of LA County has the smoking ban inside all public buildings, and that includes bars and restaurants. However, in most places you can go outside and have a cigarette. However, there is the fear that the rest of LA County will follow suit with Calabassas. If that happens I'm going to leave this crazy state. They are also trying to pass a law where it will be illegal for you to smoke in your apartment.
I think that seperating smokers and non smokers is the answer. When they started passing these laws universally, I knew it would be only a matter of time, when they got to the point where they forbade smoking everywhere, including your own home.
The funny thing is, this is Los Angeles, where the air quality leaves A LOT to be desired. The fumes from the air, are much more harmful to anyone than breathing the diluted outside air of any smoker.
There is one woman I work with who is so BIG HEADED about all the non smokesrs rights, that she told me I am not to smoke outside the door of my office for a full hour before she comes to work. She is CONVINCED she is getting 2nd hand smoke from a cigarette that was smoked an hour before she even gets there. She told me if she even smelled a whiff of stale smoke, she would have to report it. Now mind you, she lives in the San Fernando Valley where the smog is worse than any other part of LA.
I think it is INSANE what they are doing these days.
