There is a lot of wheat planted on the farms where I live. Every evening about 8 pm, we get in the truck and ride around the community with our binoculars. The bears eat the wheat and we get to see them while they are doing it. The one we saw last night was a granddaddy bear. He probably weighed in between 5 and 6 hundred lbs. Weird entertainment, huh??

You must get black bears there huh?, when I lived in Sioux Lookout, I would go blueberry picking out in the bush and we'd see them out there doing the same thing!

We live in the Adirondack Mts. where black bears are a way of life-years ago the visitors entertainment woud be to take everyone to the "dump" to see the bears-when they closed the dumps-bears had no easy access for food & began breaking into home/camps-all hikers on state trails have to have "bear-proof" containers with them-we have bears in the yard passing thru all the time-fortunately they keep on going

in a pile of open toed shoes!
When I was younger we had a bear walking through our backyard, in the suburbs. Me & my sisters were in the pool, and the big black bear was like 15 feet away... there was a helicopter following it, and they announced "children stay in the pool" they were trying to tranqualize it and get it back to it's home... and if I remember correctly it had escaped from either a game preserve or zoo and had traveled over 50 miles.

We have a lot of bears in the North Woods of northern Minnesota, but not in the southern part of the state. However, we occasionally have reports of wolf sightings down here. I think it would scare me too much to live in an area where bears might wander through your backyard any time they want to!!!!
lucat, how do you cope with that?

Those of us who have lived & grown-up here for years have learned to respect & co-exist with not only bears but coyetes/fox/porcupines/moose/deer/all wildlife-It's the people building second homes who have the major problems by thinking the animals have no right to be here when in fact it's their vacation homes pushing the animals into more condensed areas with fewer food sources & areas to live-we are fortunate to own a large amt. of acreage & just let the animals be & most the families on the road feel the same-Actually if you ignore them they'll ignore you most of the time-It's when you do something to provoke them like get between a mom & her cubs( have seen people do this with young kids just to get a pic) have food lying around, try to get them to leave, etc.that they'll turn on you-we've actually had them stroll down the driveway on their way to the stream down the hill from the house or on their way to a new hunting ground-

We had one in our driveway lastnight! We did not see it (we were in bed) We found paw prints in the garden.and the garbage was torn open and sattered everywhere. We are going to set out bait tonight to see if it comes back tonight, and try to get pictures. if we do I will post pictures.

Yes we see lots of other wildlife here too. We have cougars, bobcats, fox, black bear and I am not sure what else. Our rule is don't throw out garbage around the house. Our garbage can is inside the garage all the time. We dispose of scraps usually by riding down the road and getting rid of things like chicken bones, etc. Nothing in the yard or near the yard needs to smell like food. In our territory, the locals stay inside after dark. It is not a good idea to try and bait for bears.
