Anyone ever broken or injured their own ribs?

I went to rescue Panther saturday as he climbed up the fence and was afraid to jump down and went higher onto the downspout.

I had no ladder so I climbed on the garbage can and it tipped and I fell off and banged into the waste receptical. I fell into it on my side on my ribs. They hurt at the time but today I am hurting all around back and front and am sick to my stomach.

Has anyone else injured THEIR ribs?

I have in the past fractured ribs and broken ribs.
Not much can really be done about either.

If you get a really sharp pain while inhaling, go to ER.

Otherwise, OTC pain relief/anti-inflamatories.

My mum broke about 3 when she slipped while hanging curtains.

At one time they used to bind them but stopped doing that years ago, and all they gave my mum was painkillers.

I know my mum was in pain with them and she could only sit upright in a hard chair for a few days

a few years ago i had a bad cold and cracked 3 of mine from coughing so hard i tend to break bones very easy but that was a first for e. they dont bind them anymore cause it restricts breathing and can cause pnemonia (sp) but u do have to worry if they are freely broken they could punture a lung lok for any signs of trouble breathing not just pain. other then that pain meds and it helped me to sit as straight as possible and hold a pillow up to my chest when ever i coughed or laughed.

My husband was putting up our chain link fence in the back yard before we moved. He broke his rib by pulling on something he was doing. That was the week before we were supposed to move into our new house. All our friends pitched in to help with the move because he couldn't lift anything.

I would go to the vet, LOL, I mean doctor ASAP for an Xray. Broken ribs are nothing to be messed with, as a sharp edge can easily puncture an internal organ and cause internal bleeding.

To be sure, get to your doc for Xrays and follow their advise...

I also had a bad cold a few years ago and cracked a rib from coughing too hard. It was painful, but not as bad as what you're describing. And if I read your post right it sounds like your syptoms are getting worse. I'm glad you're going to the doctor, and I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks! Dr said I bruised (he thinks as he does not feel any breaks) my ribs and as I hit the waste can my ribs pushed in and bruised my colon and liver.

He thinks it will be ok but not for awhile. Also said NO LIFTING! Sheesh! Tell that to my boys (cats!) LOL!

OH he also said NO MORE CLIMBiNG!!!!! Guess I figured that out already!

The cats house, we just pay the mortgage..
Ooh sorry you are in pain. My boyfriend broke a rib a few months ago but they didn't do anything, just let him heal himself.
I once thought I had broken ribs but couldn't work out how I had done it. I went to the doctors and I actually had glandula fever and the pain was from my liver and spleen being inflamed! I was in bed for over a month with that but that was how it started
nothing to do with my ribs...

Hope you heal quickly!

Never broken a bone (knock on wood), but I have bruised my ribs plenty of times. Of course, that was always my own fault since I had to be front row at concerts and the barriers always hit right below the bosom on the ribs. When you have about anywhere from 2,000 - 10,000 people crushing up to try to get closer to the stage, the front row always gets it pretty bad. But nothing as bad as what you are going through, I never bruised internal organs. And it was worth the pain for a week to have been *front row*.

Yuck! I'm sorry. I hope you feel better soon. I haven't broken any bones so far *knock on wood* (they need a smiley for that) so I've been lucky....

I know it must hurt like the dickens!

Once upon a time, I was in a fight, during which I was slammed hard into a wall. There was an uneven place in this wall, and it impacted my ribs hard enough to break a few. Thankfully, I healed fast.

Awe...I'm glad you aren't hurt really bad! I hope that the pain goes away quickly.

My mom just got jumped by her friends dog and she knocked my mom off these steps and my mom did a fly through the air belly flop onto cement and broke 2 ribs and bruised everything else, plus a concussion. She's in a lot of pain, so she can relate!

Problem IS I am supposed to take it easy, BUT I have been putting up a ladder to get Ben down from the fence and moving the screen door to wedge it in Missy's door way to keep the boys and Kotton from eating her food. ALL THAT makes me hurt! You CANNOT take it easy when you are owned by 4 cats! <sigh>
