There may be Jayme, Jackson, and .... Another kitty by the name of Tucker...

I have ALOT OF concerns as far as getting another kitty, who wont even be ours...let me explain...

My boyfriend's sister is leaving for Switzerland in September. She is planning on going for 6months, but who knows, she may really enjoy it and stay! Tucker was originally supposed to stay with he boyfriend, but they recently broke up!

So she had asked us if we would take Tucker! Here are my concerns...

Money is not a problem, She will pay for his yearly shots this year before she leaves...Now as far as any other medical expenses go (If an accident happened) I have not fully discussed this with her yet!

Tucker has all of his shots (And needs yearly shots) and he is also neutered. So thats great!

He's roughly 8months old (Still a babes) and does no recieve a TON of attention at his current home as she works alot. So from what we know, Tucker gets frusterated and will tear up the carpet and spill his food and water bowls. (Please understand we live in a Small basement suite) My main concern is getting attached to Tucker and have my boyfriends sister come back and want him back, I do not only worry about me, I also worry about Jackson. I would hate for him to go through some sot of depression as I have heard cats do this when they have been around another animal for ANY period of time.

WE WILL NOT TAKE TUCKER IF JACKSON AND HIM DO NO GET ALONG!!!!

Jackson is our FIRST priority!

Iam just really scared to take on another animal...

Any information or comments would be GREATLY appreciated.

Iam feeling very overwhelmed with the whole situation!

Thank-you for taking time an reading this post!

One more litter box then the number of cats.

Remember also that most cats will eventually get along, some cats can take months to do it however. Be sure you follow all the suggestions given here and follow them carefully. IF you do that you will most probably be successful.

Don't give up, don't plop them down together and when they hiss and growl and swat assume the worst and turn the new kitty away. The huge majority of cats will behave this way for at least the first few weeks. As long as they aren't drawing blood in each other, do not worry. Oh and do a little research on cat vaccinations. They do not need them every year. Most vaccinations are good for a lifetime, vets just use it as a reason to get your cats in for their yearly check up. Which isn't a bad thing, cats should have a yearly check up, but vaccinations every single year aren't necessarily all that good or necessary.

Thank-You for the reply.

What is your take on Tucker being taken back in 6months? And Jackson possibly going through some state of depresion???

1) If this cat does turn out to be a food/water spiller, buy a plastic food mat and stainless steel bowls with a wide bottom, then attach velcro to the bottoms of the bowls and the food mat so they won't tip over. Works like a charm, and is the only thing I tried that worked.

That aside, I wouldn't worry about Jackson being depressed and if he is then would you consider adopting another cat? You will probably find that two aren't much more work than one and two are way more fun for you. If you introduce them right, they won't hate each other.

And get some feliway!

I foster cats, so my resident kitties have a lot who come and go. I think the experience of meeting new friends brings enrichment to their lives. We did have one who left Festus mourning, but we got her as a kitten, and Festus was extremely close to her. She seemed sad for a few days, but I believe she got over it.

I do think your kitty will miss his friend, if he has to leave after 6 months. If he is extremely sad, you may find you want to get him another companion.

Festus, by the way, is the first to hiss at all the newcomers. But she adjusts in a few days, and allows the newbies into our home.

Thank-you for your posts. I really needed some comments from people that have experienced this sort of thing before.

My boyfriend and I have some things to talk over, as far as expenses go and that sort of thing. Iam currently in school, and he goes back to school in January! So we need to be sure we can offord a second kitty!

Thanks again!

I will definatley let you know what we come up with!

it may be late to add my two cents but I thought I would anyway.

Stanley and Sadie, when first introduced, hissed at each other. Actually I lie, Sadie hissed at Stanley. After a couple of days they became best friends.

I work all day and am home in the evenings. I would feel a lot better being at work during the day knowing that my Stanley has a companion here at home.

I agree with the others that after you have a second kitty you may want one of your own when he has to leave. I am sure it will be hard to have him go, if he does, but it would also be a lot of fun having him. Just make sure you can afford it.

Well, I've never owned cats that got along. However, they will eventually come to an agreement. Patches and Princess can't stand each other. They hiss at each other if they get in each other's way (especially at dinner). Every few months, one decides to stalk the other one, and then there's hissing, raised fur, and a few swats. They've never drawn blood though. More like sister fights. I've seen them fight other cats, so I know what they COULD do if they got upset.

Worst case, they're like my girls. They'll figure out who owns which sleeping spots, and there will probably be some neutral zones (most likely your bed and the couch).

When Puppy joined the girls, he was there for 3 months. I can tell you they didn't miss him when we took him away.
I think he was glad not to have them disturbing his naps with hissing.

My boyfriend and I ddin't need to make the decision on wether or not we will take Tucker. Tucker will be going to Switzerland with his momma!

Everything works out...

Iam happy we didn't have to make that decision!!!!

Thanks again everyone for all of you comments and concerns.

YOU GUYS ROCK
