Miskha is blessed that you are his loving parents and are taking such good care of him..

Just look at your sweet Miskha in his e-collar.

I know that it hurts you to see him like this but focus on the fact that this phase of his recovery is temporary.

He had major surgery. Just like a human, it will be a while before he is feeling frisky again.
As he begins to feel better, his collar will drive him nuts but you have no choice but to leave it on him because he will want to lick his sutures.

Follow his vet's instructions, follow him everywhere
and know that caring people around the world will be praying and sending healing vibes for Mishka's complete recovery.

Mishka

I'm so glad Mishka is doing well. I totally understand you following him thru the house--that's just what I do when one of mine comes home from the vet's. You & your hubby must be so happy
Hope he continues to improve everyday!

libby74, thank you so much! We too hope he'll get better very soon! I am glad I am not the only one who follows her cat around the house...

Miss Mew, Thank you!!!! Yes I hope he'll forget that we left him at the hospital all alone and that we were not carefull enough to watch for robber bends, and all those needles and medicine... I know that all was neccessary but still feel so bad!!!! We could avoided all that- if just were a little bit more carefull!!!!

Well, I am starting to get worried again... It's been three days since the surgery was done. Mishka is eating, holding his food down, he is not drinking water, but I gave him cat milk yesterday and also he eats wet food, dry food, yougurt, no luck with baby food- I guess he did not like it or something, but he goes really crazy for his dry treats! No bowel movements so far! That is what worries me. I called the vet who performed surgery on him, left a message for her, she'll cal me back. Mishka will lay on a second florr for most of the day, yesterday we had to go for my regular check up and when came back he run downstairs and acted like he usually would before surgery: trying to make us play with him, and showing us how he missed us and all that, purring and laying on a floor like he wanted us to scratch his belly!
But then again- he went upstairs and spend most of the day there, just laying around. I guess I just want too much from my pure kitty- he had a major surgery and it will take some time to heal- I just want to see him pooping!
That's it. HOw long should it take?

I'm really surprised that you're feeding him dry food. My vet had me feed Elsa baby food only, 1 Tbsp every 2 hours for 10 days. But maybe they took out a different part of the intestine with her. I'm pretty sure about 3 days after surgery was her first poop. I wasn't home, but I heard about it!

I know- I spec asked vet if dry food is OK and she told me- whatever he wants to eat- if he likes his dry food- feed him with the dry food. So far we have given him all kinds of food- dry, wet, yougurt, cat milk, he would not eat baby food at all! But he also eats his dry cat treats. I hope so much he'll poop soon... I am getting really worried...

Ok, Maybe I am overreacting, but Mishka acts realy weird. He is hiding under our bed, and when comes out- if I'll try to pet him, he runs away from me hissing and all.. Could it be cause I tried to give him medicine this morning? He also won't show any interest to the food, and still- no poop. What should I DO???????????

Well, I'm glad you have a call into the vet. But when cats are REALLY sick, they just lie around, not run around and hiss, so I think that's somewhat good news. And he might be mad about the medicine.

He just lays under our bed on a second floor, will not come out of there and will not eat anything ( I tried to give him different kind of foods on a plate under the bed, he just sniff at them and turn his head away from it). I do not know is it cause of the pain? I could not give him his painkiller medicine today... Vet will call us later tonight ( her shifts starts at 7.30 PM) but I am worried about Mishka. He did not have any bowel movement yet and his decresed appetite worries me. Don't they have some kind of medicine to help with contstipation? Like for people?
He seems to be in such a pain to me....

Well, since he won't eat, it will be hard, but canned pumpkin is supposed to be great for constipation OR diarrhea. But you're probably going to have to force feed him pretty soon. I used a medicine syringe and put baby food in it and squirted into the side of his mouth. How is he lying? Side, back, scrunched up, meatloaf?

Every time I come back- it is different, one time he lies as a meatloaf, then on his side, then on his belly kind a on a side with his front paws turned inside and his back paws stretched out. If he refuses to eat his favorite food- why would he want to eat pumpkin? I do not know what to do now.... And how do I force feed him?

Well, he doesn't sound too horribly sick the way he's lying. REALLY sick cats sit hunched up and don't move at all. Meatloaf, stretched out, etc. is good. I don't think he would WANT to eat pumpkin, and that's the hard part if he doesn't want anything. But it's supposed to be good for them. I think most people mix it in their food. Is he on antibiotics? That sometimes makes them feel nauseated. Is there a possibility that his nose is stuffy? If so, he can't smell, and won't want to eat.

To force feed a cat, you can either use a spoon and spoon the food into their mouth. (Hold him like a football under your arm, with his mouth facing forward. With one hand open his mouth, hold the spoon with the other hand.) Or you can get a little syringe that they sell at the drug store to give baby people medicine with. It's like a 5 ml syringe - without a needle, of course. Make a soupy mixture of baby food and water and holding him the same way, try and squirt some into his mouth. Be careful not to squirt right down his gullet - that'll make him sick and mad.

Just forced feed him with little syringe and yougurt. Before that I tried his favorite food one more time- but he would not touch it, I think he smelled it and then did that "licking" thing ( when he lickes his nose once and then kind a make a swallowing sound- you know what I mean?
) and turned his head another way.. So, then I made a desicion to force feed him. Yes, he is on antibiotics and pain killers- and I think by now he really hates me!
I do not know if I squirted the food to the right place- but I made him mad!
That is for sure. And he was trying to get the food out of his mouth... now he is hiding again, before he went back under the bed, he cleaned his face and tried to lick his abdomenal area with the stitches... But e-collar would not let him do so...
Well, I guess... just waiting on the bowel movement... If nothing happens, i am taking him back to vets tonight...

I hate time differences - what time is it there right now? you said your vet starts again at 7.30pm right? sorry just curious on how many hours away that is.

Its okay if he is mad at you - we do what we have to do right? and its for the greater good - he does understand that

your doing great work with him, just spend as much time with him talking until you can get in touch with the vet.

I think you're worrying too much about the bowel movements unless the vet said to be looking for one. He's been cleaned out and it may take some time. Pain meds can upset the stomach so it is harder to get them to eat. I have had some success with no-salt chicken broth.

Is he consuming any water?

Not sure what time zone you're in, but let's see what the vet says. Try taking some deep breaths and calm yourself. If anything, this is preparing you for motherhood.

Not too familiar with this story.,But the constipation part I just dealt with myself...

As long as your cat isnt longhaired, or have major hairball problems..I would keep putting his paw in whatever you need him to eat..
Sounds like torture, and it can be a mess, so block him off..But my momma cat wouldnt eat the pumpkin, I kept putting a little pile on her paw, and she would lick it off..Not because of the wonderful taste Im sure. But because of the need to clean..
Just a thought, I hope he gets better

I understand that licking lips indicates nausea. Your vet may be able to give you something to stimulate his appetite.
