Last week (May 19th) Katie started acting weird, she vomited and then tried to pee on the sofa where I like to sit and then beside my computer deck. I saw a bit of blood on Katie's blanket. I call the vet and told them what was going on with her; the vet said bring her in right away. When I was in the vet he took a sample of urine, blood, and took an x-ray. It ends up Katie has a bit of blood in her urine and has a Bladder Infection. I have to give Katie her pills Mornings and Evenings for two weeks. They have sent her urine sample to a bigger lab for further testing. The Vet said he did not see any thing in the x-ray.

Katie has not had a bowel movement since last Friday. I haven't seen her eat her food or drink her water, both bowls are full; I filled them over the weekend. I tried to give Katie soft canned food and she gagged when she smelled it. I think she has lost some weight; Katie only weighs 6lbs 7oz., she also feels cold. Katie seems very weak. I have been giving her water mix in with tuna and she is drinking and eating that.

I called the Vet today to find out the results and they still do not have them.
(Not impressed)

I also talked to the Vet about how Katie is doing. He said that I should bring Katie in, so they can put her on IV - intravenous to hydrate her which will cost $115 an hour and they want to keep her there for a couple of days. The Vet seems to think something might be wrong with her Kidneys, so he wants to do more tests, another $200. I just don't have that kind of money.

The first visit cost me $400. I asked maybe I could pay in instalments but they don't do that.

Well, the Vet said that I should try taking Katie off the pill for a couple of days to see if she starts eating and drinking again. So that is what I am going to do. I pray that is all it is.

Thank you for listening.

I'm so sorry to hear this.... I know you have probably thought of this but why not try another vet. I got 2 kittens from a vets office a week ago, the vet said they had a clean bill of health. although they weren't as bad as I thought I still needed a second opinion. and I am happy I saw another vet. just a thought. I do hope everything turns out good for you. and I feel your pain really... I will keep my hopes up and keep me posted!

Aww, your poor kitty! It sounds like she's really not feeling well at all! It's very, very important for her to get some nutrition and some water, though. I would also encourage you to get a second opinion, although that may be tough since it's a holiday weekend. At the least, I would ask the vet for a prescription for an appetite stimulant.

Have you tried the warmed up chicken baby food and pedialyte (or the homemade variety of pedialyte)? What about canned food? Fancy Feast is appealing to most kitties.

walla walla wash.
Very sad
at least try to get her to drink water. dip your fingers in a cup of water and touch her nose, that may force her to lick up a few drops.

The deal with the vet is a tough one, I also dont have big money to spend on a vet. thank god all my 8 cats are doing good.

Beleave me, I would love to get a secound opinion, but I do not have the funds to do so. So I will have to do all I can do to help Katie at home. My sister has also mentioned Pedialyte. Is that to make them feel like eating food?
Well, I have taken Katie off her pills for now just to see if she will eat and drink, she did not have her pill lastnight or this morning and she has started drinking water, thank God. I put clear bowls with fresh spring water all around the house where she likes to sit or sleep and also put a small plate with tuna in tuna water in one of the spots and Katie is eating that, Thank God.

I even got Katie playing this morning. So those pills are not working for her, I wonder if there is another type of pill she could try for the Bladder infection? she was on CLAVAMOX® Tablets.
I want Katie to be strong first before I put her on something else.

Pedialyte is what you drink to prevent hydration - there is an "unflavored form" which really is not unflavored - tasted it. Just keep checking her skin - pull it up if it springs back easily then there is no dehydration if takes it's time then call your Vet - she could be dehydrated.

Go to the store and buy some meat baby food (ckicken / turkey / beef, etc.) she might take to that easier.

Of course there are other types of antibiotics which she can take - only your Vet can determine that - Please an infection of any kind is very very serious business ..

All my best!

When getting the baby food makes sure it has no onion or garlic in it, Gerber stage 2 is a good choice. I would also set up a heating pad on low with a blanket on top (or even plug in an electric blanket for her), just keep checking the temperature and make sure it isn't too warm and that she can get off of it if she wants to. Maybe you could talk to the vet about sending sub Q fluids home and teaching you how to do it, we do this all the time with clients. Sub Q fluids are bettern than no fluids, it is not just a matter of keeping her hydrated but if her kidneys are failing (which is very common for older cats) the fluids help flush out her kidneys from the toxins that are making her sick. As far as not having the results of the blood, if they have to send the blood to the lab like we do, they are at the labs mercy for the results (we have had many calls to the lab wanting to know where the results are).

Well, the Vet told me to take Katie off her pills for a few days to see if she starts drinking and eating, and she is drinking and eating, she is back to her self again, but she still has the Bladder infection so I will be going to the Vet Monday to find out what other medication would be best for Katie.

There are lots of different antibiotics. In addition to Clavamox, Baytril is commonly used for bladder infections. It is tolerated well by most kitties (Spot could take Baytril without a problem, but most other antibiotics gave him diarrhea for weeks).
