ruby, a 1yr old dsh, has a cardboard/paper fetish.

she chews her cardboard scratch box, and literally spits the pieces out. i have the vacuum her area daily (which is no big deal). i'm just wondering if this is harmful, and if it's a result of boredom?

she doesn't actually eat what she chews (well, once in a while she eats a tiny piece). but her tastes run from her cardboard scratch box to paper bags to magazines and books to mail left on the kitchen table
.

i have plenty of toys, a tall kitty condo, a short kitty tree with toys hanging off of it, plus her buddy roxy is always willing to chase/be chased around the house.

any insight? thanks!

Our cat Duncan loves to puncture the corners on cardboard flaps! If we leave a box out with flaps open we're pretty guaranteed to come back to dozens and dozens of punctures!

I think he does it because he either likes the taste or he likes chewing on the edges.

Cardboard boxes do not survive in my house. My gang just tear them all up by chewing, scratching and kicking them. I don't think it is boredom. It's just a lot of fun.

Molly can shred boxes pretty quickly! There's always bite sized pieces all over my floor!

It certainly seems a lot of fun!

I agree with everyone. Cats must love chewing on cardboard. Maybe the like the way it feels on their teeth.

Add my cat to the long list of cardboaord lovers. We just movved cross country and she has attempted to bite every box we open. Yesterday I found her in the bottom of box asleep, under a bunch of packing paper. Now I check every box before I throw it outside.

Far from boredom, I think they adore every part of new boxes and their contents.

It's not boredom your cat is experiencing. For them, chewing and ripping apart cardboard is just plain old good fun.
