How long does being in heat last?

Ethel's babies have hit and passed 8 weeks. One has already gone to his new home, one leaves today and the last one leaves next Friday. Starting the night before last she woke me up in the middle of night in HEAT!!! She did it again last night and then sometime around 4am she rounded up her kittens to nurse although since they are eating so well, they really just want to cuddle.

My question is, How long does heat last? I need my sleep!!!!!

Lisa....this is what I found:

If your female cat does not mate, she will go into oestrus as often as every two to three weeks, for several months each year, until she either mates or is spayed.

So it sounds like the timeframe for heat is rather short, but it can happen very often until she is spayed. It is probably a good time to set up mom for her spay appt.

Thanks! She is headed to the vet after Memorial Day weekend and her last kitten that we aren't keeping is gone.
