Hello!

I have a cat that has whitw ears and almost non hair on them. He got sunburns - the ears became red.

I used sun cream too late. Now his ears are red and the old burns skin is going down and under is new sesitive skin, that is pink. The ears are still hot and he doesn't like very much too tuch them. I bought some creme for sunburns and skin damages now and when he goes out i use nivea baby. it helps, but then the skin is going down even more...

i don't know what to do. he is used too be outside when the weather is sunny. he become very bad and loud if i lock him in....

this is him, but it is in winter, so the ears are ok

I have no advice about what to do now about his ears. The sun can cause burns in the winter also. Its a good idea to keep them covered in sunscreen year round in the future though,. Put a dab on his nose too.

in a pile of open toed shoes!
all animals can get sunburn... especially ones with white fur! They are fair skinned!
Definately use sunscreen, and I would buy the kind for babies, in case they lick it or something. I use baby blockers on child, and I know that it's everything free for babies sensative skin, also it's non-toxic, in case they put their hands in their mouths... good luck.

Oh, and if the skin is burned now, moisturize also with something compatible for babies.

You can put Nivea aftersun cream for children on him. I also use Nivea for children factor 30 suncream every day for my three white cats, on noses, and ears, inside and out.

Thank you very much - i wasn't sure that you will understand my message

I have two cats, one tiger and one white with black. His name is Lucky and is one year old. Last summer was his first summer, but he was more in the shadow, so his ears were a little red, but less than this year. I was too late with this nivea baby cream.

i will paste some photos that i made today...you will see the situation...

Here in slovenia is no such thing as animal sun protection.

I hope that his ears will be fine soon and than i will use nivea baby every day.
i have something for skin damage now...

Do you think that one sunburn can cause the need od ears remove??

It looks to me like that is a second degree burn on his ears. He should get some sort of antibiotic cream (in my opinion) on them. And he must be kept out of the sun until they heal. THEN he needs sunscreen on them. That is a REALLY bad burn.

i am really worried. I don't think this is secon degree burn, because what looks so bad is that old skin mixed with creme and when this together gets more "tough" or "hard" (i don't know how to say) looks so bad.

If tomorrow won't be any bether, i willo go to vet again. thanks god it is no sunny today...

His ears are much better, but now he got sunburns above an eyes, like between ears and eyes....i can't belive it! i am working on that now.

i am trying to put him inside beetween 11am and 5pm every day, but sometimes he doesn't want to come, he ignore me on purpose, because he know that a will lock him in or put sunsream on - which he absolutely hates!he is hiding in the grass somewhere.

he loves to be outside, playing, hiding, hunting....he hates me now, because i am the worse person on the world, beacause i torture him so much with this sunscream and locking...

i really don't know what to do... what if sunscream won't work enough, what if, what if...

from other thread..

t will be worse if he thinks you are tense or angry, so my advice is to calm down, sit in the garden with a book and get something that he really likes - mine will come for cheese! Put it near you and then ignore him. Fortunately, right now the weather is so awful in the Balkan region that he can probably go a day or two without cream. I put Nivea on mine every day as they go out, and though they hate it they are so anxious to get out that they put up with it! He is a beautiful cat, so I hope you can protect his ears and nose.

I see you have cat's with sensitive ears too. So you do what? When you put this sunscream on and do you do this just ones in a day or more often? It is good, if i put this cream on in the morning - if it works till evening? Are your cats out all day? does this nivea baby works for your cats?

I am really worried... my other cat is all day in front off house. he come immediately that you call him. but this one is ignoring you on purpose.

Now the ears are pretty ok, but now i have to put this sunsream on also above the ears - like bettween ears and eye. he got sun burns there also. Your cats?

Yes, the weather was good for his ears, but today is very sunny and it will be in the future day, i think.... i have never wished rainy weather so much than this summer

I think I'd take the cat in and have your vet look at it. May be a case of more then just a sunburn. I've heard that you should keep some kind of sun screen on white ears if they are in the sun alot.

My white rexes never got sunburned cause they were always inside and did not have the direct sun - only thru glass and apparently that stops the sunburn.

I put the cream on once a day, on ears and nose and so far that has been enough. Persil didn't get burnt last summer. But this is the first summer for my boys so we will have to see. As you know, Sarajevo is high up so UV is strong, as well as getting up to 42C sometimes in summer. Like you, I try to keep them inside at the worst times of day, but it is difficult as I am not always there to supervise them. Fortunately when it is very hot they seem to like just to lie in the shade!

In July I shall be moving to the north of France, so the problem will not be so great.

Can you not attract your cat with a treat? I have taught mine to come to me as they know they will get something.

Hlello,

I have the same problem with my white tortoiseshell cat (who looks as thought he could be related to your cat !)..is almost identical to yours...

I am going to try to keep her in for a few days, but because it is so hot at the moment, I will leave the electric fan on and the windows behind the shutters open to try to make it more comfortable....

I have also decided to leave the garden table and chairs outside...to give them more places to be in the shade...

I hope this helps...
