You don't want to get a kitten from some London pet shop. Those may not be the best ones. Your friend should look for a responsible breeder so he can get you a nice, friendly & healthy kitten.

Here is the website with contact details for some British cat clubs, they should be able to point you to a good breeder.

Please do not buy from a pet shop. Those animals come from Mills and backyard breeders who do not know what they are doing and are full of health problems.

Isn't it illegal to sell cats and dogs in petshops in the UK? The best thing you can do is a websearch for breeders in and around your area...see which breeders ship overseas - there's one Himi breeder here in Malaysia if you're interested - I can put you in touch with him...

Sadly it isn't illegal to sell cats and dogs in pet shops, although I think they have to have a licence.

Are himalayans what we call colourpoints? A type of persian?

I agree - bad idea to buy a persian from a pet shop. It's not a good idea to buy any cat from a pet shop but persians in particular (because they are a popular breed) should be bought from a reputable breeder as they can suffer from polycystic kidney disease (PKD) which can be inherited so you need to be sure the parents are clear of the disease. There are lots of breed clubs for persians and they should have kitten lists. Alternatively you or your friend could buy a cat magazine such as Your Cat or Cat World - kittens for sale/breeders will be listed in the back and you can contact one of them.

Here's another list of cat clubs http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homep...CATS/clubs.htm

That sounds about right! I don't know much about persians but I do know there is no breed called a himalayan over here - here that just refers to the coat pattern.
