I bought 2 new cardboard scratchers yesterday to replace some worn ones. I put them out, and as usual Freckles was the 1st one to use it. A few minutes later there was a tussle by one of the scratchers. Freckles was on it and was ambushed by Bob. I didn't think anything of it. When I went by it a few minutes later I noticed a pee stain (most likely from Freckles) and that Bob was sniffing that spot this morning. Is this normal? Freckles is my submissive cat and I've never had a spraying problem with either. They're both neutered, so that's not the issue.

Perhaps he was feeling like he had to claim it as his. Or it could be something else. You might want to take him to the vet to rule out any health problems if he marks anything else!!

Urination during a fight is common. We used to have two girl cats who could really get into it and then the pee would go flying. It was super fun.

You can always place a call to your vet to see if they think you need to bring anyone in for a check up.

You'll probably also want to toss that scratcher so they don't pee on it again. i don't know how well it would hold up to being soaked with an enzymatic cleaner to get the scent out.

Thanks for the help. In the last few weeks Bob has become a little more aggresive (and I posted on that as well) to the point where Freckles will sleep on my pillow to prevent some aggresive play. I have Feliway but it doesn't seem to help right now and I ordered the Peacemaker formula from SpiritEssence.com (I have used other formulas with great results in the past). I'm at my wits end and acutally thought about giving one of the cats up if this keeps up. My fear doing that is that neither one would be easy to place - Bob was a semi-feral and has asthma and Freckles is older and has allergy issues. I just want them to get along again.

you may want to get them both checked out by a vet then.

Our male cat really started to harrass our female cat around christmas (very unusuall as he's a big baby). We thought it was because we had a stray mom cat and kittens in the house (and that may have been part of it) but we found out a few weeks later that he had a raging UTI that took two rounds of anitbiotics to clear up. i think he was acting out because he was hurting and it was making him crabby.

Bob just had a checkup in March and was fine at the time, and Freckles is due at the end of July. I'll call the vet anyway and check. They're still eating and using the litter box properly which is a good thing.
