Yay Yay Yay! The runt of Jada's litter, Jasmine(the black female), just ate wet food and used the litter box!! I took the advice of TNR1 (Thanks!
) and just started feeding momma wet food again in the bathroom with the kittens and they have all sniffed it but the black female just spent about 5 minutes eating it. I was so surprised and so happy!
I made a movie and then left because the other 3 were sleeping. Then I checked on them about 10 minutes later and there were two little poo poos in the litter box uncovered!! It HAD to be her! Is it possible that the wet food moved through her that quickly? Anyway, just wanted to share my excitement about Jasmine starting to wean!
Here's the video!

Funny thing is that they won't touch the water yet. Well, I don't watch them 24/7 so I don't know that for sure but I haven't seen it yet. Yours will come around soon enough! Just one week difference at this age makes such a huge difference in them!

I'm so glad that my advice helped. I will seriously use that technique again if I foster another mom and kittens. It's amazing how quickly they start to use the litterbox (oh, and don't be surprized if you find "accidents"...another good reason for having them in the bathroom...easier to clean up little poops). I truly believe that kittens learn from mom and if they can see her eating and going to the bathroom..they will pick up on it much quicker.

I can't believe how quickly this technique worked. Before, I was pulling Jada out of the bathroom and trying to entice the kittens to eat and they were clueless. By letting Jada eat the wet food in there, they obviously watched her (or at least Jasmine did) and figured out what to do!

Sounds wierd but I wish I would've seen her pooing in the box. I bet it was so cute!

I'm glad I ran across this thread. Way to go little weaners!

I haven't really even thought about it with my babies...I guess I just thought mom would bring them out in the open when it was time.
Mine are 4 wks old today as well. Any information for what I should be doing to help them at this age would be extremely helpful!

What do you mean bring them out in the open? Ours are all in the bathroom with mom 90-95% of the time. We have them all set up in there with their nest, mom's litter box, food, water and toys. I'm feeding her wet food and I guess Jasmine liked how it smelled cuz she chowed on it! Also, I see them watching Jada use the litter box so I guess that's how they'll learn...... from watching her.

They are also loving playing with the little balls with bells in them now. The balls roll really well around the bathroom floor so it's cute to watch them all batting them around.

Kassie had taken her babies upstairs to my daughter's room and went under her bed where the drawer is out. They climb out and walk around and play but mom won't let them out of the room. She will lay out in the hallway and watch them. I was thinking that I may need to bring them downstairs and block off the back part of the house where the food, water and litter boxes are to see how they do maybe?!

Yes, I would definately try that. Give them access to it so they can see what she's doing and they will mimic her.

When we open the bathroom door (it's our master bathroom) Jada will lay in front of the bedroom door between our bedroom and the hallway so that they can't get out! I thought she was just a controlling momma but I guess it's common.

I guess you're right...must be part of their instincts!

I just thought that momma cat brought them to the food or litter when they were ready. lol
Just one more reason that this site and everyone in it are so helpful and valuable!

Thanks!

I put the babies in the kitchen that has an open door to the utility room where they can get to the litter box, food and bed. Momma does not like it at all! She has already grabbed one of them and jumped over the gate with it and I had to take it back in there. They don't seem to mind it too badly except that momma stays on the living room side of the gate and meows to them and then jumps over the gate many times as to teach them how to do it! She even got one of them to climb it! It got half way up it and started back down.
Hopefully, if she takes them out, she will take them back upstairs to go under my daughters bed where she had had them. I don't dare leave them free to roam the living room for fear they will get stepped on and hurt or killed. They blend right into our carpet.
On a good note, I was able to put some soft tiny bits of food in their mouths and they eventually took a nibble on their own!
