Hello
I have a 2 year old Himmy. She is regularly fed with Royal Canine Persian Dry food. Only on friday nights i give her IAMs wet pouch food. Should i be mixing more different kinds of food. Different flavor/dry or wet?

Thanks

I feed my Maine Coon (who is an indoor cat) Royal Canin Maine Coon Mix and some Royal Canin Inside. She has stopped eating wet food though. I used to give her some wet food every day at dinner time. She free feeds dry food the rest of the time.

Wet food helps cats get water. Since my Maine Coon drinks plenty of water, I am not worried that she gave up wet food.

I would be giving more wet ... see evan alot of water with dry doesnt equal the same moisture and digestabilty of wet... I have often mixed drys together but Zoey doesnt like that

I agree - I would be feeding more wet food. Bijou eats less and has slimmed down since going on a wet food diet with less dry food - (about 1/2 cup per day of dry).

Vet says giving more wet food builds up tartar in teeth, because of which they can loose teeth. Besides, i heard that wet food has more meat by-products that dry food.

Read labels ... drys that dont have by products make wet without by products... ohhh and your vet hasnt read any current research as in the last 5 or so yrs wet food has been found to be better for teeth ( ie cats dont chew)

She's probably drinking plenty of water because she needs it to process the dry food. Dry food is greedy - it takes lots of water out of the cat's system, so a cat ends up having to drink more water than usual when fed dry food. One of the first things a vet will tell a client whose cat has been diagnosed with kidney disease is to stop feeding dry food.

Dry food is notorious for causing cats to become dry food "junkies". Try a few different kinds of canned food that may spark her interest - you may have to put some of that dry food in it just to get her to taste it!

Maybe you should read this:
http://www.maxshouse.com/feline_nutr...Which_is_reall (7th alinea down)

Bottom line: cats on wet food always have a bigger moisture intake than cats on dry. I said moisture because water is not the only (or even the main) source of fluids for a cat, a cat has evolved to take its fluids out of prey, which are usually not available in dried form, they contain 2/3 moisture.

I switched my cats to raw, they drink less water but pee twice as much, which is what you want for the kidneys and the bladder.

Btw, I like your username (I'm a Pixies fan)

Most vets know very little about nutrition and there are many good wet foods out there without by-products.
