I have a question, the kittens are 3 weeks old today and yesterday started climbing out of the nest. They are still behind the couch, its hard to get back there to pet them and handle them. I really want to socialize them. Also behind the couch there isnt much room to walk around for the babies. Should I move them to a place where they can actually walk around if they decide to explore?

Also the room they are in has hardwood floors. Im worried they might try to leave the nest and accidentally tumble out and land on the hard floor. Or will they be ok? Should I put some kind of blanket on the ground under the nest?Right now i have pillows surronding the nest incase one were to tumble out, but i thought they would probley need to learn to walk soon and it would be difficult on the pillows, i dont know if i should move them or not.

Now that they are 3 weeks is there anything extra i should be doing for them?

Thanks agian, sorry i always have so many questions.

Sydney...don't apologize...those are very good questions and may not only help you, but may help someone who is 'lurking'. If it were me, I'd move the family from behind the coach to another room.....I actually had my foster family in the bathroom which worked really well as I put the nursing box on top of the bathmats. If your kittens are squirming to get out...I would actually get a cardboard box (like the ones you get xerox paper in) and cut an "exit" on the front. This won't stop them from crawling up the side, but this is why you make the sides "lower" all around. I put a pillow inside for mom to lay on and she can still get her babies if she thinks they are travelling too far away. The other advantage I found with that arrangement is that I had mom's food and litter in the same room. There came a point in the kittens lives where they started to get curious about the wet kitten food mom was eating and started eating it on their own (same with the dry food). I also made a little "litterbox" that was easy to get in and out of out of the box tops of xerox boxes...easy to dispose, easy to fill....small sides for little feet.

Thanks so much for the advice!
I also have one more question.

The room they are in is pretty stuffy. Before they were born i closed the a/c vent in that room cause i know the newborns have to stay warm. Would it be ok to open the vent agian? Can they regulate their temps now?

Thanks!

3 weeks may still be a bit on the young side..but I admit, I didn't have the "stuffy" issue. You may want to PM Gaye...she would probably know.
