Hey everyone!

Not sure if you remember me or not, but I'm the one who found the two kitties in my neighbors yard, and after trying to take care of them, they passed a few nights later. Anways...I'm not sure if you all remember me telling you or not, but another stray had kittens under my deck, well, they survived and they are now 5 weeks old! I didn't get to bring them in, because the Momma cat was to wild for that...she let's me pet her, but moving her...ehhh she wouldn't let me. Ok. So this brings me to my question. I have owned cats since I can remember, but I've never kept one inside. I live way out in the country, and they are safe from traffic and other people(plus these kitties were born inside of my pool fence. No dogs or anything could get in). I'm keeping one of the kitties, and I have decided that I do want to keep it inside. What's the best way of "kitty-proofing" my house, if you will. I'm nervous that she'll get hurt, or into something. I'm very excited though, because if my two outdoor cats are as spoiled as they are, she is going to be soooo spoiled. Anyways..any tips or advice you have would be appreciated!

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Here are two of them(in my siggy). The runt was under the deck, but he looks just like the orange one. I'm keeping the black one(I think, not 100% sure which one I want..such a hard choice). I've named her Sassy.

First....I understand that mom is wild, but I would encourage you to borrow a humane trap and get mom spayed. Otherwise, she will get pregnant again and bring you more kittens. So please do right by the mom and have her spayed so she can live outdoors and not have anymore babies. I have linked a site with TNR groups in your state:

http://www.alleycat.org/orgs.html#nc

Also, here is a list of low cost clinics:

http://www.lovethatcat.com/spayneuter.html#nc

As far as kitten proofing your home, you will want to get down on your knees and see if there is anything that she could get "into" that she could not get "out of". Additionally, there are some plants that are poisonous to cats so if you have any plants, make sure they are kitten safe. I recommend you go to your library and check out "Cats for dummies" which has a whole section on getting ready to bring your cat home.

I have, but those that I found all wanted landlord approval, and my landlord just won't let me have more than one.

Here's a reprint from something I posted elsewhere (no hijack intended, sorry!):
I have just one, which is all my landlord will allow. I don't think it's fair - he has two! The problem is that his are both boys that peed all over their new apartment after they moved in (we live in a duplex and the landlord has the apartment upstairs,) so much so that the landlord had to replace his rugs.

So, just because HIS cats peed all over, he assumes that any I get will also, so he won't let me have more than one. Plus they were shelter cats that had already been neutered when he got them, so he has no idea when it was done or exactly how old they are.

I tried to tell him they were just being territorial and were probably stressed by the move, but he wouldn't hear it. His cats also don't get along and they fight all the time - it sounds like elephants upstairs when they are fighting. They each have their own roon upstairs, and God forbid if one crosses over the threshhold into the other's territory!

I REALLY would like another furbaby, but without landlord approval, I can't get another from the local shelter. If anyone in or close to MA has any kittens they are looking to find a good home for, Ginger would love someone to play with! Until then, she makes do playing with her beanie baby orange tiger kitten.

Ginger'smom~

In my experience, some placement groups put "Landlord approval required" on the form, but don't really check... might be worth looking into. ???

No worries, I plan to!
Thanks for all the advice. I'm still nervous about it...and to think, usually people are more worried keeping them outdoors! I'll check out the sites!!!

GingersMom- I really REALLY wish there was some way I could give him to you. I would love for him to go to a good home, where he would have another kitty to play with. He is so outgoing, spunky, and FLUFFY. I know you would love him to death! Are you comming to NC anytime soon? hehe..If they're is anyway I could get him to you...seriously let me know! I'm so scared to get rid of my two little babies...I don't want anything to happen to them, but I just can't keep all three...
It's unfair to them.

I wish I could get down there for a visit, as my aunt lives in NC and a good friend does as well, but I just don't have the vaca time right now to make the drive from MA. Here's a REALLY stupid question, but can kittens be shipped? I'd be happy to pay for it if it was at all possible, once he's old enough. I have a great vet here, and my Ginger is a happy and healthy girl - I just know she would love a little brother to boss around!!

There is also a really good yahoo group that has great information in their file section on trapping, taming etc:

Yes! They can be shipped, because breeders and such ship them all the time. If you find out the info, I would be more than happy to ship him to you. Nothing would make me more happier than knowing someone who would love him, is taking him. I really hope their is some way you can get him.
It would make me feel so much better! Please let me know ASAP!

All this of course if things don't work out with junior67!
Wasn't trying to over step you!

OH and I took some more pics of them all when I brought them in to feed them today. I'll post them sometime soon!

I would be very careful about allowing them outside since they haven't received their first shots. Also, some adoptors may want to keep their kittens indoors only...so I would encourage you to keep them indoors. Additionally, mom should be kept indoors and away from intact males until she is spayed...we don't want her to become pregnant again.

Yeah...I know, but I have to take them outside because they're still eating of of thier mom...and she is way to wild to bring inside! I tried to get her when she first had them, and no luck. Even if I did use a trap...I don't have anywhere I could keep her, considering she'd probably go crazy. There is no way any dogs or could get them or anything like that, because there is a fence around my pool, and they cant get in. But, As soon as I get them eating on thier own, I'm going to bring them in for good, and I've already started to litter train them. Also, I understand your concern about the male cats...I'm worried about that too! I'm going to trap the her and have her fixed ASAP.
Thank you for the info though!

GingersMom...You can still have one if you want!
I'm still thinking of how happy that'd make me and the little kitty- and of course you! Hehe, glad you liked them!

I'm researching pet transportation & shipping - I'll PM you when I have specific info. It requires that they get the rabies vac at least 30 days prior and need to have a vet sign a clean bill of health for travel, etc...
