I have 2 female cats (Daisy and Poppy) which I have had since they were 8 weeks old (they will be a year old in July). They were litter trained when I got them and everything was fine at first. But then I noticed that one or both of them was peeing behind my television. This went on for ages so I decided to get another litter tray because maybe they didn't like sharing one. But it still continued to happen, but then it just stopped. At this point, I didn't let my cats go outside but then I did and when Daisy came in from outside, she ran in and then went and peed in the corner of the hallway (it was almost as if she had been so excited from being let out). I caught her and gave her a telling off and a little smack. Then it stopped for a while but now she has started pooing on my carpet. What I can't understand is that she did it right near the litter tray, but not near enough for her to have missed or to have kicked it out. How can I stop this? I think it is just Daisy that is messing everywhere as I have never caught Poppy doing it. I always see her go in her litter tray or outside.

Daisy did not deserve it.

Are your girls spayed? When was their last checkup? There are numerous reasons for inappropriate toilet manners. The most common is UTI (urinary tract infection). You can read all about it and other causes in the stickies above.

They were spayed in around January time. She isn't always peeing though, she is pooing at the moment.

Hitting your kitties isnt a good way to disapline them.. I've learned that cats arent like dogs, they get hit, they wont trust you no more and wont be your friend, and they will take revenge.. Cats are more like humans then you think.. with the litter box thing, maybe the positions arent good?, if they pee in a specific spot, clean it up good, get the smell out.. They will frequent the spots cuz of the smell, then maybe put the try near or on those spots and see if that works.. My kitty did the same thing, and she only pees/poops in her try now... another is is there any other cats aroud? they could be marking cuz of the new cats in the neighberhood.

Please click here to find threads on problem behavior. You will see one thread about elimination problems (peeing) and another on poop problems. Following the instructions in these threads (including a vet visit) will likely end your potty problems.
