my mom called the vet and he said that my 4 week olds should be weened by next week then we have to give Kitty another 2-3 weeks before we can do anything on her. my problem is that i am not really comfortable with getting her spayed after 3 or 4 weeks of pregnancy. should i go on with it anyways? i dont know what to do!

Considering she just had a litter and the next litter could be born weakend by that...Also the added stress to her if the vet was willing to do it 4 weeks along -I- would have her done. I was tryign to get a stray cat spayed at 6 weeks but only found one place willing to do it and the price was out of my range at the time(they required vet office call, blood panel extra cause she was pregnant and then the actual spay) I'm in tight range and have other cats to take care of so i had no choice but to let her have them or take her to the shelter where shed be euthed-semi feral and 6 weeks along isn't needed in my area. So in end I'm keeping them all but letting mom out(SPAYED
Good luck with whatever decision you make-and if you do let her have them ask vet if she needs any special supplements. Also it might be looking into calling shelters, rescues, and other vets to see if they know of anyone whod spay her now avoiding the decision you don't want to make if shes further along. RJ

Then best advice I can give you is talk it over with a vet you trust, I'll be honest I lean towards spaying animals up till they would be viable if delivered(I forget age but think I've read most kittens before 55 days gest. will not make it-may be later) I've seen to many cats sufer due to no one wanting a kitten whos no longer "cute" at 7 months old and grown up. The kittens that are here in this world right now need every chance they can to find a good home...Thats my view on it and my reason I wouldn't think twice of spaying.

It will all work out Jessie
I have 22 rescue cats as of now(one going back out after spay cause not getting along and 2 might be getting adopted if vet ref clears
. All mine are spayed/neutered except mom and her 5 babiess...Trying to trap the strays that are in area currently. Somedays I look out window and see them walking around and just don't know. Theres only so much I can do for them as I don't have that much spare money and have to worry about my crew first. RJ

My family does the same thing. We trap the cats in the area and if they are tamable, then we give them to people that we check out as good mommies or daddies. We have trapped and spayed/neutered around 30 cats in our little area of the neighborhood. All have good homes and we keep in contact with the owners to make sure that things are going well. We do this out of our own pocket, and plus since we have started this, I swear we havent seen any cats on the side of the road. We live next to a very busy highway. I am glad to hear that we aren't the only people who do this. There is an adoption agency here for cats and dogs, but if the animal stays there for 72 hours, then they kill them. Regardless if the cat/dog or whatever is a baby. Its really sad...

It's great that you practice TNR....I volunteer at the Alley Cat Allies clinic and find it so rewarding to know that these cats will never have to have another litter of kittens. Once they are spayed/neutered, they tend to have a much better life, even if they are returned outdoors.

There is a really good yahoo group for people who work with feral/stray cats:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/feral_cats/

You may want to join.

The ones who spay a pregnant cat are not the killers, nor is the ones who deal with it every day at shelters and must euthanize due to lack of space. You are being RESPONSIBLE by spay/neutering that way you prevent any kittens or thier kittens from ever being in an unwanted situation. I can't imangine dealing with your brother. my family is supportive of my vet decisions. I know years ago we got our boy and on first vet visit we had an appt to get him neutered 4 months in advance-I was raised with moms side of family being very responsible, and my dads side being the let them breed then dump kittens at shelter when 6 weeks old-so have seen both sides. I hope he backs down and realizes whats best for kitty. RJ

Jessie...I'm truly sorry your brother reacted that way to you. You may want to share with him that thousands of cats and kittens are killed every year in shelters because there are too many of them. You are simply trying to do what is best for your girl.

A similar thing happened with my sister-in-law's dog. She is a Basset hound and came in heat before she realized it, and she came home and there was her "puppy" and a MUCH larger dog who had gotten into her fence! She called the vet and told them what happened, and they fixed her soon afterwards because the vet said she probably would die trying to have puppies by a dog that much bigger. My sister-in-law told the vet just not to tell her. And she may not be pregnant-emphasis on "may"
-my oldest cat never got pregnant on her "baby heat" (as a matter of fact, she only had 3 kittens, one time a year for 3 years-when she had 2 litters in one year, we got her fixed pronto AND we always found homes for them ourselves and met the people we were giving them to AND it was a long time ago-all our cats are fixed now
But sometimes I miss waking up to kittens pouncing each other in our bed
).

I don't know if I could do it, but if you have talked to your vet and made your best decision for your cat, then ya gotta do what ya gotta do
.If you change your mind and decide that it is too risky or you just can't the sooner it gets here, you can always get her fixed right away next litter since you know what to expect (and ask your vet how to build her up while she's pregnant with the new litter-KMR supplementing, etc. She might could stand that now, if she is pregnant).
