Is anyone here a vet technician? I have been thinking about a career change for a long time (I work for the government and hate it). I'm still doing some research on the job to figure out if it might be right for me.

I'm not a vet tech but my former supervisor at a health care agency went back to school to become one -left our agency & said it was the best thing she had ever done-she was 45 when she made the change

Oh that is good to hear! Thank you.
I am just reluctant to go back to school again. I don't think I could find something with no experience, and most programs are 2 years.

She went part time the 1st year & then full time-also worked part of the weekend at her vets for experience & to see if it was what she really wanted to do-her husband was very supportive the whole time so she could do it-

I am a vet tech.
10 years ago I applied at a vet's office with no experience, and for some reason they hired me. I had no schooling, nor have I ever, to this day. I learned so much so fast I the first year, and I went to another practice and became head technician in a year. I am now the head tech and tech supervisor. I love my job in the animal aspect of it but honestly, like you, would rather have another job doing something else. I am going to PM you about the job stuff. I think it might upset a lot of people on here and I don't want to make anyone sad.

I went to school to be one and was a semester away from being certified when I got pregnant with my oldest son and had to leave because you can't be around animal feces when pregnant.
I have to say as much as I love working with and helping animals, there are MANY things I can't handle doing. and as mama said, they would upset people here if said. You have to do things the owner want's done that you don't agree with and I don't want to be put in any position that makes me go against my will or better judgement

I'm in school to be one!
There are lots of people there who are beginning a second career.
I'm really excited about it because there are soooo many directions I can go once I am certified, large animals, small animals, wildlife rehab, zookeeper, marine life, birds, specialities...etc. its almost endless.
Plus the classes are interesting. Intensive, but interesting.

AND my mom said that on a list of the top jobs right now (that are in demand) vet techs are in the top 5.

Thanks everyone! I'll let you know what I end up deciding. I'm hoping to figure things out by the end of summer.
