Does anyone know what the birth rate statistics are for unspayed female cats? It's a long story, but I'm trying to write something up on a cat we have right now who is pregnant & ready to give birth to her second litter in less than 4 months. (I had a sinking feeling when those people surrendered her & her kittens she was pregnant again.) I know we have the information at the shelter, but I was hoping to have this done by tomorrow to show to someone. I'm looking for something that says how many litters they can have in a year & the average number of kittens. If anyone knows the info or where I can get it I would really appreciate it.

i did a little googling and came up with this website http://www.felinenetwork.org/docs/spaymyths.rtf

and the important part: . Statistics indicate that one cat and her litter can produce 420,000 cats in seven years.

I'm assuming that this is probably in optimum conditions, because I was reading another site and this lady who cares for ferals was saying that in true feral colonies, there is a very high mortality rate.

Thanks that's the kind of thing I was looking for. I just feel so sorry for this little sweetie. If they had just brought her too us a little earlier we would have made sure she didn't have another litter so soon. I just wish people would educate themselves before they get an animal. The people surrended her & her 2 kittens, another cat & her 1 kitten & the father. The kittens were 5 or 6 weeks old & had stoped nursing. She's a very sweet girl & deserves so much more than just being a kitten mill and we are going to make sure she get the wonderful things she deserves.

A lot of groups are now doing a spay the momma program where they will take the kittens if they also have the momma spayed. So the owner gets back their cat (spayed) and the kittens get placed through the group.

that sounds like a good idea
win-win for everybody, including the cats
