I am taking care of a kitty who is deaf and going to deliver any time. She was found as a stray and was unfortunately too far along to get spayed. This will be her last litter. Does anyone have experience with deaf mothers? I am aware some of her babies will be at a high risk of also being deaf. Are there any things I should watch for since she can't hear her babies crying? Any other advice from anyone who has been in this situation in the past?

I haven't been in that particular situation - but is she white? With blue eyes?

Yes, she is white with one blue eye.

Given her unique situation...I would confine her into a small room that does not have any areas that the kittens could crawl under. You may ever consider placing her in a dog crate in a small room for extra security.

She will just need to not be able to "lose" the kittens because she can't hear them. That's why Katie was saying to use the crate. It's the white/blue eye thing that makes them deaf (to be very simplistic) so if the cats are other colors, they're pretty safe. Unfortunately, I think white's dominant. When was she due again?

I keep all my foster kitties in a small room. I usually use a plastic box for them to birth in. That part is all set up for her. She has had milk for a few days and I expect she will go anytime. Her temp normally runs low (100), but it was 99.5 this afternoon. Maybe a sign? I have also read that the gene is dominant. Thanks.

The only advice I have it this. It is very important to make sure she is feeding the kittens. If she cannot hear them cry, she may not remember to feed them. I do have 2 deaf cats, but neither has ever had kittens.

Good Luck with this girl! Deaf cats are truly special.

A friend of mine has Turkish Angoras with high percentage of deaf cats. She's never really had a problem with deaf mothers. They seem to know when their kittens need them.

But to be on the safe side, I'd confine her to one room till the kits are a few months old. That way she can observe the kits and know. And yes if she's deaf, some of the kittens will probably be deaf - especially any white ones.
