I have to ask, do any other kitties jump like 3 or 4 feet in the air to attack something that's like directly in front of them.

It is the cutest jump..it is almost completely vertical but really high up for some reason..just to attack an object right in front of them.

Anyone elses babies do this?

Oh boy, My Smokey does this all the time, the funniest thing is when he does it right at the fish tank, like he is trying to karate kick the fish in the tank!!!

Yes - my Jaffa does the vertical jump! I love the fact that they have all these different jumps and wiggles in their repertoire! He jumps up very high and pounces on his "prey" (ie a feather on the end of a stick!) with all 4 paws. Very cute.

Yes
all the time. Anything that moves including shadows can trigger the jump.

my 5 mnth old Spike will do that all the time. he will be playing with my roommates 5 yr old male, Azzie. he will just jump up in the air right in front of his face, without touching him and then run away before Azzie has a chance to swat at him since Spike does this when Azzie is NOT in a playful mood. i just think that Spike is just trying to torture Azzie, but it's funny as heck to watch as it goes on for hours.

Spaz used to do that, only her prey was completely invisible to anyone but her.

Baker does the vertical jump when he's wrestling with the other cats.

Lucy jumps in front of the basement door. I think she believes that she can jump over it (how?
since there is no opening and then she would go flying down a flight of stairs). She will do this 5 or 6 times, and can clear a good 4 feet go straight up.

Sometimes they are jumping for a really tiny insect, a moth or something that is so small you can't see it when it moves fast.

this kinda has something to do with jumping: my manx before she got pregnant would sit at the front door staring at the knob for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. she would try to jump up and try to open it. when that wouldn't work she would look at the door like she was trying to open it if she stared at it long enough. when she would realize that it wasn't gonna open she would jump on the nearest lap and get right in our faces and meow as loud and long as she could. this could and has gone on for hours at a time. she started doing it again yesterday even though her babies are only 3 days old.

I love tossing up 6 tennis balls simultaneously. They both jump up into the pile, totally overstimulated. I don't think that they're even going for any one particular ball...they just want to jump in the middle of them all!

Rusty will do it but not from playing, anything new on the floor and he gets real jumpy and carefull checking it out sneaking up on it, and if there is a big noise or whatever he checking out moves he will jump way in the air with his tail all puffed up. He has always been like this, real jittery. On the opposite end of the scale is Tuffy, the house could be burning down and I don't think he would even care.

Swanie once got scared by something (no idea what), but he puffed up real big and ran over by the chair. When he got there, he jumped vertically in the air, all four feet, like a cartoon cat. It was the funniest thing I've every seen. But otherwise, he leaps at something, but not vertically. I have seen cats do that though, it's really cute.

One of my childhood cats did this once in a doorway. There was a backpack kind of blocking the doorway on the floor, and instead of walking around it, the cat jumped like 4 feet clear over it.. We laughed so hard.

My 2-y-o Michiko does those funny leaps. She "ricochets" off the walls going down the hallway sometimes... it's hysterical. Sometimes we startle her with a "psst" noise when she's sniffing her catnip mouse, and her back end will flip over her front end. Maybe that's not fair to tease her, but it's pretty funny to see that crazy reaction.
