It's not an owl

It appears to be a Starling so don't be surprised if a rehabber won't take it.

Ever see those flocks of little birds that are shiny black, mixed with some birds that look the same but are dull brown?

Those are European Starlings.
An introduced and invasive species, also one of my favorites.
A lot of people will raise them as pets, they become quite attached to humans and can be pretty decent talkers and they are big clowns.

Here's a good link for info on a Starling:

I agree that the bird definately does not look like a baby owl. I googled up pictures and it just doesn't appear to be one. Did you tell the rescue place that the baby bird was an owl? If so, that is definately why they said they would take it.... We have a place here locally that will help with injured/ abandoned baby birds of all types. The place your mom is going to may be like that as well

I wasn't sure if you meant Dori or just her name, so I will give you the whole story

Dori was a Christmas gift from my fiance in 2002.
I wanted a cat so badly but I couldn't ever get him to agree because he wasn't a "cat person".

His best friend was getting a kitten for his girlfriend for Christmas that year. When he went to pick up the kitten he fell in love with the other 3 in the litter as well. He brought them all home and gave a kitten to his mom and brother, which then left little Dori. He called my fiance and told him he had to give Dori to me because he was stuck with her
And so my fiance went along with it and we went and picked her up.

I took a week to name her
She was almost named Sadie, but I went with Midori after my favorite drink, Midori Sour.
