No, they do not know what is happening to them the first time.
Nesting behaviors and such are hardwired instincts, they don't know why they have to do it, they just know they have to do it.

I'm just hoping she doesn't panic. You know it scares them sometimes. I took in a stray a few days before she popped...and she loved her little box in the closet. She started her labor in there and I kept an eye on her. Then, all at once she screamed and flew out of that closet and ran thru the house and had her first kitten in the middle of the kitchen floor! She flew outta there so fast!! After she saw what it was and cleaned it up,she took it right back to her nest. But I just knew she mist have thought that somethng was trying to kill her!! If Skittles is crying after you....she just may need you close by. She's scared...poor baby!!

in a pile of open toed shoes!
My sister was in labor for like 30 hours... and they had her pacing the hospital floors
...eating ice chips
.... emptying her bladder
....resting when necessary
.... it sounds exactly like what Skittles is doing. She sounds like she is doing exactly what needs to be done... what a good Mommy she will be!
And what a relief for all of us anxious
Skittles watchers when she finally gives birth!!!

Birds do it, bunnies rip out their own fur to make nests for their babies, and cats find a quiet cozy spot that's dark, and hidden from everyone...so I really do believe that they know there are babies that are coming. What does everyone else think? Am I crazy to think that they know they are giving birth soon?
I agree with both. I think they know - but...when my sister was having her second, she almost had it on the toilet, because even though she know she was having a baby, she just had "that feeling" and her body got confused.

Well, that's it for this watcher tonight folks...I'm really hoping that Skittles has her kitts tonight!!! Sending positive, calming energy to skittles and her meowmy...it's 1.30am and I got a full day tommorrow - my favourite aunt is having major surgery on her aneurysm, so I wont be able to check in until evening...Good Luck!

No,you're not crazy!
I'm no expert for sure, but every first time mom I ever saw give birth had no idea what that thing was that just appeared!!
Sure, they know something is going on with their body...but they have no idea until they see the first movement and hear that first little squeak! There instinct tells them to prepare....but not what to prepare for! You can see the expression on the mothers face at birth....like...what the heck is that thing???
The second time birth is a totally different story....because they are then experienced.

She is looking like she doesn't have a clue. I am keeping her with me. She likes that. I try to keep petting her but she leaves.

Come on skittles only 12 more minutes for our guess.
Just kidding I just want her to have those babies. Just watched video of Jada's 4 kittens, can't wait to see 9? or more of Skittles.

Misty was kneading last 3 hours before they came out...it was going with the heavier contractions. To the people who've had pregnant cats before-is that a very common sign or? RJ
