I called my regular vet to find out the cost to have Sadie spayed and was quoted $250. Then, I called the vet her cattery used -- they were $160 (all prices Cdn$). Do these prices seem high? What should I expect to pay?

$250 is high, $150 is about normal. HOWEVER go to SpayUSA.com and search in your area. AND do a google search. You may find it for under $50 even free.

Zoinks! $250 sounds awfully high, even in canadian dollars! Even 160 sounds a bit high, but then again I haven't actually paid for a cat alter, all mine came previously fixed
but when I got my dogs spayed/neutered neither of them were over $100 (american dollars) I would check to see if there were any low cost alternatives, in my area we have "traveling" vet clinics, for example, the neuter scooter
i love that name!!! that costs only 50 dollars and includes basic shots, not sure if they have those up north, but I don't see why not

If you are comfortable with it, you can tell us where you live and we can help you look. If you'd rather pm me, I'd be happy to do some internet searching for you!

250 seems incredibly high, 150 sounds about right for an average price. In some senses, you do "get what you pay for", type of anesthesia, stitches, etc, but some vets just plain overcharge. Zissou was spayed at a low-cost clinic, but it's subisdized by generous donations, so they don't do any corner-cutting and still only have to charge $45 + $5 donation for spays. The only bad thing was she caught some kind of kitty illness while there, but its all better and that could happen anywhere!

Through my Humane society it will be $55 and then i take the coupon to my vet they do a pre spay exam (free) give her any shots that she needs (pay for just the cost of the shots) then you bring her back the next day. Drop her off at 7-7:30am and then you pick her up around 4-6pm. So i pay $55 for the spay $22 for the pain meds, and then price of shots

It costs me $75.00 to get a cat spayed, and if the HS has any funds to help with low costs spay and neuter it is anywhere from $30-$40 depending on if its a male or female.
And I thought $75 was high-I cant imagine paying $150-$200!! Wowsers!!

Wow I wish mine was that cheap.... I was quoted 450 for the spay and the drugs I could knock off 45 dollars if I chose not to get a microchip implanted in her

I got my 2 boys neutered for $40 each in the parking lot of the animal shelter. It was a traveling RV. They travel to different counties each week and they only take so many reservations at the time. It was fully equiped and they had cages built inside the RV. I had no problem at all with the RV and if i had a choice to do it over again i would. Its called catsnip for anyone in GA.

Yeah, they aren't 'van' they are mobile surgery clinics.
A lot of vets donate their services to do the mobile surgeries in an effort to get more animals fixed.

I think in our state it's funded by No More Homeless Pets in Utah.

in a pile of open toed shoes!
go to friendsofanimals.org this is how it works... you fill out the form, they get back to you in 24hrs via email...you look to find the vet you want in your area, they give you a list of participating vets... then call the vet and see if they charge extra for add'l services (you can try a few of them if you want), then buy the certificate online and then make the vet appt. But you need the certificate when you go into the vets office. This is how I'm doing it. LuckyGirl is getting spayed next month.
Good luck!
