I took my cats for their regular shots last week, and the vet (a new one in this practice, has seen my cats once before) said that Meggie has a leaky heart valve. She's 10 yrs old. Anybody else have a cat that developed this later in life?

My 12yrs old white cat have that, vet suggest me to do some test so they can set a base line for further ref. I havn't have time to do it yet but I will take him to the vet in the next month or two.

And if find your cat breathing heavily for no reason it is a red flag.

Did your vet have another vet in the clinic double check what he/she was hearing through the stethoscope? It's always nice just to have a second opinion. It's also possible that your cat has had this murmur since birth and it has never been diagnosed before. An ultrasound would be needed to further diagnose the severity of the murmur. Just make sure that the vets/techs are aware of Meggie's condition before she undergoes any procedure that requires anesthesia.

Thanks for the help! She isn't showing any signs of distress (have a Boxer with a heart problem, so I'm pretty read up on that
) and no, I didn't have another vet check it this time, but plan to next time she's in. He did note it on her chart. She has seen several vets over her lifetime, as the first vet we had had other vets (1-2) working with her, and all but the newest vet (out of 4) at this clinic (we moved 7 yrs ago) have seen her, both sick and well.

Goo- Do you remember what kind of tests they recommended? This is the only cat who actually LIKES to sit and spend time with my two yr old (and give warning "bites" when she's done, instead of a smack full of claws
), so I'd like to have her around for a LONG time
.
