hi there

on saturday i had to help deliver my best friends cats kittens. we knew she'd started early labour saturday morning & by the time i'd got down there 8pm saturday night the contractions had just started & she became clingy to us (she is very cling to both of us as we both hand reared her & my cat, her brother, long story for another time).

by 12am she was having regular strong contractions & was panting alot. we looked at many websites which told us this was normal. round about 1.30am we saw the amnio sac emerge for a min or 2 & then pop back in. this happened again 10 mins later, then this red bloody stuff trickled out of her. so we though that the sac must have burst. anyway, we saw no sign of kitten emerging untill 2.15 we saw a tail, then that poped back in. saw we knew that this kitten was comming bum first, i had a look on the net which says this happens 30% of the time with first time preg queens. half ahour later & still no kitten, we kept seeing the tail emerge & then pop back in. by 3.15 we still had no kitten but we did see a paw emerge & go back in. the cat was getting very tired & frustrated so we called the vet who told us to help her along. it was me that eneded up doing the sticking the finger up her bum thing & pushing the kitten out. the queen made an awful screaching noise as the kitten emerged but once it was out all the natural instincts kicked in & she cleaned the kitten, chewed the umbilical cord & ate the after birth.

we expected the next kitten to come soon after but we waited for an hour but nothing. she looked rather tired & was just lying down so we decided to leave her & wake up every hour to check on her. i didnt see the second one being born but i walked in on her delivering the 3rd (head first this time).

she only had 3 kittens, we were expecting more & her belly still looked rather big so we decided to take her straight to the emergency vets rather than wait untill monday morning. she & the kittens are all fine but she keeps trying to move them which i know is normal but its the way she is picking them up thats bothering us. she is picking them up by the legs, belly, tail, head & by the throat but not by the scruff of the neck. is this normal & safe?

I dont have a answer really except my cat started moving her kittens at 3 weeks of age and she picked them up by the throat also! It didnt hurt the kittens so I wouldnt worry about being carried by the throat.

I noticed Jada would grab them by the throat or the side of the neck mostly. I also saw her grab one by the back yesterday as the kitten was wandering too far from the nest and Jada was anxious to pull her back. I'm sure it's ok if she's not drawing blood.

New moms often don't really know how to pick up their kittens, so long as she's not hurting them it's probably okay.

she is moving her kittens for a reason, she is not happy with the current location maybe because she feels it's not private enough. You might try moving her and the babies to a bathroom or even a closet so she can feel safe.

Congrats on the new kittens!

thanks all,

there is a number of reasons why we think she is moving them. we first put her in the kitchen in a square hole (like box) between a cupboard & the oven, we think its too cold for her here as its floor level & a tiled floor which can get quite cold with draft & she keeps trying to move them in to the room. she had the kittens in the room on the sofa (covered in towels) & we then put her on the floor under a low foot stool untill we got up & we then moved her to the kitchen. my friend has 4 kids (oldest 8y/o & youngest 8months) & they play in the room so we wanted her out & somewhere safer, plus little fingers touch which we didnt want. so we moved her upstairs in a box into the bottom of the airing cupboard (floor level again), a bit warmer in there but not too hot as the warmer weather is here in england now. but again she keeps trying to move them to the room, dont know why, we thought it might be a bit noisy down there with the kids & everything.

She may feel that the new location isn't safe. I also agree with trying out a closed off room (if possible). The other option is to get a large dog crate to put mom and the kittens in...again...it needs to be in a quiet location.

Also, mom cat needs to be kept indoors only from now until she can be safely spayed once the kittens are weaned. Cats can become pregnant again as early as a week after giving birth.

It's amazing how it only takes one time...I'm glad your friend plans to have fixed once the kittens are weaned.
