black cat banned

All because he's a black cat... Does anyone else find this idiotic?? I sure do... I'm not bias or anything....

Poor beautiful little kitty. This is such sad rejection for him when all he wanted was love.
Thats so sad I hope the owners move or something-I would be so upset if that were me.
That really stinks. He is a cat got to love them I am sure he doesn't mean to try to scare the people. U think
post #5 of 24
This has to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard. How can anyone fear a cat, just because it is black

Sad story. The saddest thing I heard about black cats (in UK) is that they are often the ones who are overlooked at the rehoming centre because people think they're boring. I think this is why Milly clung on to me at the shelter when we went to look for some more cats - she didn't want to be left behind again! Anyway, back along there was a little poem about them in our paper, I wrote it down and now here it is for you all:

We may not have a tabby's stripes
Or a ginger's golden fur
But we'd love to sit upon your lap
And greet you with a purr
For we black cats are many
But we get left behind
Though we are soft and cuddly too
And seek owners who are kind

I love black cats!

When I get my own place I am going to fill it with black cats and kittens. I think I shall single handedly solve the black cat rehoming problem in West London.

I haven't had one in years, but I love black kitties too! they remind me of sleek black panthers

If the cat was not well taken care of or often tripped people (causing them hurt), then maybe I could see banning the cat frm using the stairs.

But since it's all based on a superstition, why don't they just run back to their apartments and throw salt over their shoulder into a sink??

My favorite, I have alway's had a black cat, I have 2 now.
I can't imagne someone picking it out because it's black, my little rescued girl is the funniest, sweetest girl and Loves to give and receive Love...Man some people are aren't all there

Poor kitty, I don't think he looked ferocious likes the article says.
I do agree with this statement
"Even if this reaction is based on superstition, people who are afraid of the cat should not be forced to encounter it on the stairwell, particularly when the area is not illuminated,"

Keep the cat indoors, problem solved!

OMG, as I'm typing this a frightening creature just entered the room. Help!!!

Oh wait, it's just my black cat who's been a loving, loyal companion for almost 13 years. Sorry, I wouldn't normally ridicule a person's beliefs, but that superstition about black cats is so stupid and outdated. Those people need to get a grip. There's enough in our world to truly be afraid of. To show bias against a cat because of it's color, is absolutely ridiculous. Black cats are beautiful!

I feel like....if I lived in Israel, a black cat would be the LEAST of my worries!

Granted, cats of all colors shapes and sizes should be safe in their homes, rather than wandering the stairwell. As this kitty's owner, I'd be afraid that people would act out of their superstition and harm my cat if I continued to let it out in the public domain.

We had a thread on that article (from 2003) ages ago - it would be interesting to know how the story ended. I'm rather partial to all-black cats, as they look like miniature black panthers, and have a special "glow". It's not just black cats that are "left behind" in shelters. Black dogs are also the least likely to be adopted, especially if they're large.
Our local shelter has two black cats who have been looking for homes for almost two years. Not only are they black, but they're mature (8 & 9 years old), indoor/outdoor cats (indoor-only cats are much more in demand) and overweight. They're both cuddle bugs, and it really hurts to see them passed over all the time.

That is horrible! Even if they went to court about it though, I would be afraid that someone would harm the cat if the court rueld that it was allowed there. The people who complained will be pissed and might harm the cat.

Excellent point!

Yes, I think the ban is completely absurd and prejudicial. Penelope agrees with me.

That's pathetic if they don't like black cats then....too bad, i agree though that it would be safer for him inside.

i had no idea they were the last to be adopted and also agree that they look like sleek black panthers, iv'e rescued two black cats, one of them, bill, is with my mum and the other one, twiggy, i rescued from a woman who was going to put him down, he was a fat fluffy black kitten though, he ended up getting run over which just broke my heart....one of the many reasons my cats are indoors only now.

i love black cats and dogs, anassa is mostly black but has white markings.

i think black cats with green eays are amazing too but are hard to come by.

That is a sad situation, but for the safety of the cat, the owners should keep him indoors! Esp. if they realize the prejudice against black cats in their area, which, although ridiculous, exists just the same. I pray for the safety of that cat! and wish the owners the best outcome possible in their lawsuit.

What a stupid thing to do!! He's a gorgeous cat
post #20 of 24
I just cannot understand some people's reasonings!! Notice in the picture they used, he's showing his teeth. They probably wanted a scary look from him.

I have four black cats (well, one of them is a tuxedo......)

Four is the Chinese number for death. A black cat is, well, a black cat........

All of them had brought innumerable blessings into my life.

Things that are unlucky to other people had always been lucky for me. I am blessed.

At least the cat is just banned. I had several dogs in Taiwan that was cruelly beaten to death and eaten. All because they were black dogs with white feet. Apparently Taiwanese superstition says those dogs bring death to the owners.

Well, it seems that a lot of Taiwanese culture is focused on death in the first place..... That was one of the reasons why I am not a Daoist Buddhist anymore......

Edited because I cannot spell today

It is ridiculous. What makes a cat different because of the colour of its fur..Its like human racism, it is not acceptable.

I was thinking the exact same thing! It's just as ridiculous to judge a cat by his color as to judge a person that way. That being said, I don't think anyone should really be letting their cat walk up and down a public staircase, for the safety of the kitty, lest he be stepped on or worse.

I don't know what it's like in other places, but I've actually read that a lot of shelters in New York won't adopt out black cats in the week or so leading up to Halloween, because people use them for animal sacrifice. I can think of a couple of things I'd like to do to those people.

I love my black cat. I think he is the most handsome boy ever.

That's the policy in most German shelters, too, and people with black cats are warned not to let them out for several days prior to Halloween, even though it isn't a traditional German holiday.
