...as a free kitten if you're going to be responsible about it, right? Why is that so hard for people to understand?! Last week my boss asked me for help in getting a stray mama cat and her five kittens fixed when the time comes.
So, the plan was do this under our low cost spay/neuter program, along with getting all the initial medical done on the kittens before they go up for adoption at our usual $50, which includes all that. She's since found what she calls "responsible" homes for two of the kittens and doesn't think there should be an adoption fee. Is she kidding? If these people are, in fact, responsible, they'll pay the adoption fee and realize how much money they're saving. Why don't people get this?!

well, DUH! Chip is actually my cheapest cat, because he was already neutered & vaxed when i got him. i offered to reimburse his foster meowmy for the vax, but she refused. the others - i paid for spaying, vax, etc - & 2 of them were 'found' cats!

Thank you! I was afraid I was missing something really obvious.

If you pay for s/n and vaccines then of course there should be an adoption fee! I wouldn't trust her judgement about who would be a responsible pet parent if she is that clueless about adoption fees.

This is such a frustrating situation.
I've been giving my boss and her neighbor advice, offering whatever help we can give, loan a kennel, etc..., but it seems they'd rather go off and do their own thing! Besides, giving kittens away, her latest email says they plan to separate the little ones from mama cat even though they're only six weeks old. I've already told her that's too young! Why won't people listen?!

Zissou was "free" because she was a feral and we found her at 2 1/2 mos. And then paid for all her vaccines, spay, etc.

If you're paying for all that, then the kittens shouldn't be free even if its this person's best friend. I can see "free" kittens going to family and close friends if you know they'll spay and vet the cats, but other than that its a horrible idea.

She doesn't understand what happens to "free" kittens, or what? If she's just ignorant maybe you can knock some sense into her.

Must be such a frustrating situation for you.

I hate the idea of "free" kittens. It doesn't give the buyer the true impression that kittens cost money. If they aren't willing to spend the adoption fee....then what are they going to do when it's time for vaccines and spays.

My Lucky was a "free" kitten since i found her abandon in a ditch, she cost me for deworming, de-fleaing (is that a word? lol), vaccines, fecal exams and spay. My second cat came dewormed, defleaed a vaccinated....was it worth the adoption fee....heck yes!!

Silly people. In some cases you can talk till you're blue in the face and they won't hear a word you say!

of my 4, Java was the most expensive - & she was found, also! not only was her spay the most, since she was in heat, but she also had a bacterial overgrowth in her intestinal tract that required 2 rounds of antibiotics [& 3 vet visits] + some bene-bac before she was 'back to normal'! on the contrary, Chip cost me a whopping $10 - his adoption fee - since he was neutered prior to being found, & his foster mom didn't let me reimburse her for his vax.

Sherbert came from a shelter, and I hate the idea of 'free' cats too! In the end though, they're usually more, b/c when you buy from a shelter, you get their shots and stuff, but when you get them for 'free' then you still need to go out and buy all of their shots and stuff...if you're really a responsible owner...lol!
