For three of my cats I by food in the 18-20# bags. It last about 6 weeks or so.
For Ox I buy a much smaller bag 5# maybe??? I keep his in the house but the others is emptied into a hanging bin on the wall of the garage.
I know people food can get stale but what about pet food????

Yes, it can go stale, and if you are using one with natural preservatives it can go rancid as well.

I buy 40# of feed at a time and store in two airtight containers with no problems.

In addition to going stale, dry food also loses much of its nutritional value as soon as you open the bag and expose it to air.

Though not the most inexpensive way, the best thing is to buy small quantities and keep it in an airtight container.

Well, that doesn't sound good. I keep their food in an air tight container but I open feed so there goes the freshness.

I buy small quantities, but I've read recommendations that if you buy large bags, you should break down the bag and freeze portions of it to keep it fresh. I've never tried it.

I buy the 18# bag of nutro natural for three of the cats that is stored in a big that empties into a container when the handle is pulled-they don't have the probelm. Ox's food Chicken Soup for Cat Lovers soul its the 7-9# bag. But I think he wasn't eating due to losing a tooth (fang) he seems ok now.
