I just got a new kitten, as some of you will know from my question on a diff thread, but what is a good age to take a kitten to the vet to get checked out? He is about 6 weeks old right now. When my g/f got her, they said he was to young (she got him from petco, they had someone there adopting out kittens.)

6 weeks is too young for a kitten to be taken away from mum - they should be a minimum of 8 weeks and peferably older. Pure bred kittens don't usually got to their new homes until 13 weeks. However, you've got him now! You should take him to your vet straight away to get him checked over, wormed, flea treatment if necessary etc. Kittens tend to have their first vaccinations at 9 weeks and 12 weeks (the reason pure bred kittens don't get rehomed until 13 weeks is so that they can have their vaccinations before they go). It's always a good idea to take a new kitten to the vet anyway to get registered and checked. You can also discuss with the vet when to get him neutered.

if you take him to the vet s/he should be able to make a good guesstimate at his age for you. If he's 9 weeks he'll be ready for his first vaccination and you'll soon be able to introduce him to your older cat.
