Why would a Tom cat attack a female that has been spayed?

The reason I am asking, the other night this feral tomcat attacked my lil Katie. She has been spayed. He put a great big scratch on her side. Nothing serious, but she was sore and could barely walk. It looked like it hurt her to walk, After a couple of days she was ok and back to her old self again.

I have my name in for another trap as soon as it is available. I couldn't catch him the last time I had the traps, but was able to catch two other problem cats.

But why? I do not understand!!

Because when they want to have sex, they'll try to mount anything - emphasis on thing - including bedding, my arm (on the arm of the sofa), stuffed animals, etc., never mind a real live cat, spayed or otherwise.

Males will try to mate anytime, whether a female is in heat or not. He doesn't know anything about spaying, he just wants to mate.
