My little cat Todd is about 8 years old. Just tonight I noticed while petting him that he has a hole that has penetrated his skin about 1 inch under his neck. The hole is about 1/8 of an inch in diameter. There is no bleeding and no sucking sounds. When I touch the wound my cat does not seem to feel it because he does not bite me or flinch. He is acting normal and he seems not to notice it. What should I do about this? Will this heal on its own? Has anyone else seen this in their cat and healed it? Please Help Me, I love my cat very much!!!!

You need to get Todd to a vet quickly. Unfortunately the outer skin heals over quickly and allows the infection to stay inside. Cat bites (if that is what caused it) can be very bad and can cause cat scratch fever, blood poisoning, etc.

Please take Todd to your vet immediately to have it looked at and treated.

When you put your finger over the hole (without touching it) just hovering over it, do you feel heat rising up to hit your finger or palm? If so, then get the cat to the vet. Keep the cat indoors, watch the hole, if it starts draining, or it closes over and then puffs out- he is going to need a vet, if it gets red, swollen or draining foul smelling fluid he needs a vet.

The Last Time I took him to the vet he had the same type of hole in the side of his stomach and the vet said it was an abcess and if he ever got one again just let it heal on its own and don't even bring him to the vet. This hole looks the exact same as the last one too except the last one oozed yellow/white pussy like stuff. This wound is not bleeding at all either. There is very little swelling and it seems to be getting a tad bit smaller.

I would certainly keep a close eye on it - look for the signs that Hissy mentioned!

Abcesses aren't good and left, they can cause no end of infection! It sounds as though things are going okay with it for the moment, but please do keep a close eye and take Todd to the vet as soon as you notice anything wrong or changing with the area!

Sending health and healing }}}VIBES{{{ Todd's way!

Please keep us updated!

I can't understand a vet saying not to take a cat with an abscess in. I thought my first cat had an abscess, but she wasn't registered at the vet at the time, soI asked my neighbours advice (ex rescue person) - she denied the cat had an abscess for 3 days, till it burst - the day after, she took her to the vets for me, and the poor cat had to have an op, and drains put in it. Not at all pleasant.

I live in Rochester NY in a 2 bedroom apartment.
I had a cat that had a round wound like that, it turned out to be a BeeBee Gun Pellet. A neighbor kid told on his brother and the mother called me up and apologized profusely. We treated it with antibiotic ointment and kept him in the house for a couple of weeks and he was fine. That was the last cat that I ever had that was an outdoor indoor cat. Any chance that is what it is?

I don't think it is a pellet gun or BB gun hole. I took him to the vet with the same thing this is (thinking the neighbors had shot him with a pellet gun) and he said there was no bullet and that it was an abcess wound. If I see a bullet come out or see on laying around the house I know what neighbor will have shot him and I will confront them! This is odd that 2 months after 1 abcess he gets another. It's possible but it better not be a wound from a BB or pellet.I really don't think it is a wound from a gun. I noticed that the wound has shrunk in size since yesterday and it seem to be healing pretty quick. I am 99.9% sure this is the same thing he had 2 months ago. I think I will ask my neighbor if he has been shooting any black cats lately and if he says yes, I will ask him if it was wearing a purple flea collar, if he says yes, I am going to tell him if he ever shoots my cat again, I'm going to call the police for animal cruelty and shooting an innocent cat for no reason at all. If he says no then I will know it is just an abcess.

My senior Ox was shot with a pellet gun and luckily then pellet landed at his leg joint w/o damage. He had a large (1 inch) hole with no exit wound.vets couldn't find anything w/ surgery. He has had abcesses from cat fight that I drained myself (not for the squeemish) then he was treated w/ antibiotics.
Next time your cat is at vet I would have Xrayed to see if it was BB gun.

My Black had an abcess on his neck once, it was from a cat fight, and it drained and healed up nicely. I gave him antibiotics from the vet and they said to use antibiotic ointment on it. He was just fine.
