I live in apartment building - there are about 10 + buildings consisting of apartments, condos, ect.

Anyways, on Friday, they found our neighbor - 2 doors down, dead in his apartment.

My question....

When they rent out this apartment again, do they have to tell the new tenants that someone had died there? For some reason I was wondering this, or do they just forget about it and just rent out the apartment again?

It kinda freaks me out a bit, knowing that someone died next door to us, and John had known him as well

Now I'm wondering if something awful had happened in this apartment, would they have told us b4 renting? I'm sure they don't have to tell us, but I was just curious anywas, I know its kind of a stupid question - but I was wondering.

I don't rember how we had found out about a neighbor passing when we lived in our last apartment when I was a kid. That was a long time ago now.

But my guess is they won't tell if they don't have to. They probably just want a tennant to pay them some moo-lah!

It's pretty gross
but I'm pretty sure they don't have to say anything.

It could happen anywhere unless you build the place yourself really. I mean think of the old houses! I just prefer not to think.

I used to do case managing work with the elderly, and a lot of them live in elderly buildings, and beleive me, a lot of people have passed away in those apts. So I'm sadly used to it.. I had one lady who passed away in front of the TV, the remote was still in her hand. So NO, they don't have to tell you and they probably wouldn't.

I highly doubt they have to tell anyone anything about people who have lived (or died) there in the past. It's probably up to their discression.

That's a little scary....reminds me of Ghost Whisperer or something you'd read in a novel.

It may also depend on the state. I have heard of some states requiring deaths in houses be disclosed to the home buyer before purchase. There must be some sort of time frame though or else old houses could be like "then Miss X died in 1899, and Mr. Y in 1920, etc."
I haven't heard if the same would aply to renters.

Sadly my fiance's mother died in her apartment of a heart attack/stroke. We moved his father in with us, but he was still penalized for breaking his lease!

I like old houses and it would be very unusual to find one in which someone had not died, probably several over a number of generations. In the old days people died at home, not in hospital. I rather think that a house is happy if it has seen births and deaths, and the daily lives of lots of families, and I am part of a human chain adding to the spirit of a house.

I agree with you Jenny. My place is 80 years old. I'd be quite surprised if nobody has died here. I'm sure I can sit here all day long and scare myself, but you're right. Of course, it doesn't change the fact that my television goes on and off at will, changes channels by itself, and un-mutes itself!

However, I have read that you must disclose it with a sale of a house, and I think that it would have to be the last person who lived there. I doubt they'd have to disclose further back than that. But I've never heard that you'd have to disclose to potential renters.

In some states, it is required for a sale for X number of years. A house in my neighborhood when I was a kid stood empty for years beacuse a guy committed suicide there, and nobody would buy it.

I doubt if they will tell, unless they get asked. And btw, how did the guy pass away? I live in a old house and I am sure that the woman that lived here passed here, but I dont let it get to me
My in laws are buying a house thats been in the family, forever! And the couple that used to live there, passed away there, and so now my sister in law swears she sees the ghosts of them but ONLY upstairs! I dunno if shes being truthful or not, but whatever they still live there....oh yeah and also, about a yr ago the son that used to live there passed away and they spread his ashes out across the pasture!!
