The Passat handled really well, I do miss the handling. But everything else was a mess, and parts were SO EXPENSIVE. A month after we bought it, the transmission went. We should have sold it right then and there, but instead we coughed up $4K to fix it. We had it for... 4 yrs I think? Each doorhandle went (2 went twice), in fact, there was a point where I didn't have the money to get a latch fixed so the door started swinging open, so I had to bungee & ducttape it across the rear seat to the other door.
What a treat that was, the friends got a kick out of it, though.

The computer system had a glitch where the Check Engine light was on 24/7 even though nothing was wrong, and to fix the system it would've cost upwards of $800. Other problems were the O2 sensor, trunk latch, alignment was almost always off, A/C needed to be recharged every 3 months, etc etc etc.... the list goes on. The transmission went again in November '04, and I sure as heck didn't have the money to replace THAT again, so donated the POS to an automotive program at a nearby high school. Those poor kids probably learned more about VWs than they ever wanted to
All in all, with everything that went wrong, we (my mom helped with some) blew about $9 or 10K on that thing. Oof.

Trunk lock fell out, passenger door lock broken, accelotator cable went, radiator went, break line burst, spark plug wiring assembly needed replacement, sun roof jammed, heat controls broken, wheel bearings needed raplacement, etc....However, I do a lot of preventive maintenance to make sure I dont break down, I change the fuel filter once a year, air filter once a year, change belts once a year, the break pads every year as well flush the radiator.

Starting in 1995 at the tender age of 16:

1977 Jeep Renegade (old beater for me to learn to drive on)
1994 Ford Ranger XLT (bought used in 1996)
1997 Honda Civic EX Coupe (my favorite, bought used in 1999)
2003 Saturn Ion (least favorite, bought brand new in late 2002)
2004 Honda Civic LX (just purchased this about a month ago)

The only one I've ever bought brand new was the only one I truly despised and regretted. I'm happy with my used Honda now and plan to keep it for awhile.

1st car at 17 I paid $600 for an 83 Plymouth Horizon (gold). I then bought a new 96 dark green cavalier at 18. It was totaled in June of 96.
My fiance' was driving and a Ford Ranger ran a red light. We then both drove his firebird, I want to say it was an 80.
Fast forward a few months, we were married. I got pregnant, and the Firebird has a push button start alarm very low under the dash, that I couldn't reach, and I couldn't see a baby seat in the back either, so we traded for a 94 Cavalier (blue).
We drove the 94 Cavalier for about a year and a half, and then another accident, it wasn't hubby's fault this time either, but a lot of bad luck.
Then we bought a 98 Kia Sephia (blue), still have it, and my husband drives it back and forth to work now.
Our main vehicle now is a 2002 Kia Sedona black minivan. I love the Kia van, but hate the Kia car.
I have now decided to begin my beg and plead for a new convertible beetle.
I have to keep my van though, as I am a true "Minivan Momma"!!
Although now I would like to have a van with the stow and go seating, but alas my van is almost paid for, and still has 8 years left of warranty, since we put 2 extra years past the 10 year. I still don't know why my husband did that.

Okay here goes:

1986 Suburu GL (at 200,000 miles the transmission blew and you could only drive in 2nd gear)
1986 Volkswagon Gulf (from my dad, I totaled it 6 mo's later)
1995 Dodge Neon (one of the first made, nice car but had tons of probs- eventually sold back to my parents for my bro who totalled it a few years ago, let's just say he ran over some leaves, got stuck and the car burnt to a crisp
)
2001 Plymouth Neon (one of the last made with the plymouth name, has been pretty reliable although the paint job leaves a lot to be desired)

Currently I also co-own a 2006 Scion with hubby- It's awesome- we traded in his 2000 Honda Civic.

50 yrs old and never owned even one car. Passed my test 29yrs ago, barely drove afterwards, but my licence is still legal, right up to my 70th birthday. Isn't that daft? I could quite legally get behind the wheel of a car today, and drive it. (probably into the nearest wall, but, hey, I have a licence
)

Yeah, me too.
Current car-chestnut Ford Taurus-I've been driving it for about a year, and it is a few years old. Looks new to me, though! LOL!
Last "car" Purple Ford van-90's model...took it over 200,000 miles-my first and last van. I loved having 7 seats so I could haul lots of kids. Otherwise, vans are no fun!
Before that...a white Oldsmobile-I really liked that car.
I had a big old Blue boat...maybe an Olds.
Before that was 18 yrs ago with my ex, he had the most tacky Mustang-he stripped all the paint off to repaint it but never got it done right. I don't remember the others!

Never had a new car...don't really care what I drive so long as it gets me and the family where we need to go, and I can afford it. And I grew up in Flint, Michigan, so I try to buy American cars. (Hard to do anymore!)

Now dh is a different story...he could list every car he ever owned, and lots of details on the ones I have had!
