But we are all moved in!
My husband and I started at 6 a.m. Saturday morning! 14 trips in the truck and a new puppy later, We're DONE! It was a long weekend to say the least. One of the first things my husband did was, yeap, you guessed it, got a dog!
We went to the SPCA saturday morning after we had made a few trips to the new house. At first we just went to look around..(yeah, right). Every dog they had there was a pitbull/mix which had restrictions of only chlidren 15 years old and up. Just when we were about to leave, we went into the puppy room. Everyone in there was also a pit/mix. There was only one that wasn't and everyone was oohing and awwing over him until he stood up to get on his bed, he had a limp and everyone walked away from him mumbling. He was a Viszla/Lab Mix and 7 months old that had his leg broken about a month ago. He came in as a stray in the ambulance.
I noticed while I was watching that he really didnt respond to anyone. So I thought "maybe he's not used to people". I walked up to his stall and said "well hey there cutie" and immediatly he perked up and walked over to me. I put my hand up to the fence and he started licking me.
I grabbed a volunteer and asked if we could take him out to play with him.
He was a very inquisitve little thing. Sniffing EVERYTHING along the way.
He knew how to fetch, (just not "drop it" lol) and was very cuddly.
Well when he walked over to my husband and laid his head on his leg, I knew it was all over and he had a home!
His name is Jake. He's very sweet and energetic. He's already learned sit, down, come, no, and we're working on speak. I looked up what exactly his breed was and it's a Hungarian Hunting dog. Which makes it ALL the better for him to freak out the cats!
Trust me, I am still in the "doghouse" with them! Slowly they came out of hiding yesterday and very quickly let Jake know that even though he may be bigger, they are still in charge! He's already started to be protective with us. Around 3 this morning he heard a racoon in the backyard and decided the WHOLE house should be awake to see what was in the backyard. Oh, did I tell you he was in the bed with us doing this?
Talk about a wake up call!
Then when I woke up this morning I had hot puppy breath going down my neck. I look over and he was under the blankets with us, feet straight up in the air, snoring like a grown man! Needless to say, I think Jake is going to be a character!
Sorry this was so long, I will post more later this week when my internet at home is installed. You know how long THAT takes

Awww, how sweet of you to give little Jake a loving home! I always hate when people think puppies/kitties are so sweet until they see they have a problem like that - bless you for bringing him home!

Good to hear that you are getting moved in - you will have to post pictures of little Jake when you get the internet hooked up @ home!

A handful is an understatment!
He's 40lbs of energy. I have to go home at lunch to check on him. We can't leave him in the yard because it's too hot outside, and can't crate him because of his leg. We took him to the vet yesterday and they said in about a month he should be back to normal with it. Apparently when the SPCA found him it was too late to set the break so instead of re-breaking it causing more pain, they splinted it for about a month and let it heal. So he may always have a limp and favor his left leg. When he's ready we will start taking him to the dog beach and parks to swim to build his strength up. They told us to keep him calm (yeah right) until then. That's like telling a 4yr old to not move or play! We do our best but sometimes he just wants to run and rip through the yard to get all the energy out of him. I don't even want to imagine if he didn't get it out.
Let's just pray my new house is standing when I go home

Thanks everyone!
I just checked on him, he's doing fine. He's been in the house since 7am this morning by himself (1:30pm now) and he had NO accidents, didn't tear anything up and was happy as ever to see me! I will upload some pics probably friday after the internet is on.

Jake sounds too cute! Congratulations again on the new house! And congratulations on the new puppy! Thank you for giving him a chance! By the way, Jake is the name of my in-law's dog and he is just the sweetest guy! So I say good choice in names!

He's a sweet dog. We love him to death. I thought once that maybe we should have waited until we were settled in the house but then again if we did we might not have been fortunate enough to get Jake. He may be Vizsla but he's also Lab mix so he has a great disposition. We keep him on the leash whenever we're not in the yard or house. He's not the type to wonder until he sees another dog and then he's curious more then anything. We had to buy him a special "no pull" harness because even though he's only 35-40lbs, he's a STRONG puller! He walks ME
I took some pics of him yesterday in the yard with his pumpkin ball. He loves it. When he drops it, it laughs hysterically. Whenever he hears it, he comes running to play. If one of us are too busy to play he will toss it in the air and fetch it to play with himself. It's so cute!

Heh well also keep in mind while they are not a hound, Labradors are hunting dogs
I love all dogs and all mixes. And I get to see LOTS of them at the kennel I work at heh. I guess it just amazes me some of the owners, complain about behaviours that are A-typical to the breed or/breeds
and I stand corrected (just checked) Vizla's are in the sporting group as per AKC but are labeled a hound as well heh.

either way have FUN with Jake
and thank you for giving him a home

Oh I was raised with a black lab whole lived 17 years.. Duke was his name. He wasn't just a pet, he was family. Just like my babies now. I know he's going to ba a hyper one, I can deal with it. I have 2 hyper boys who love to play with him. The 3 of them play in the yard with sticks, and balls, and tug o' war ropes until they all 3 want to pass out from exhaustion. I have noticed I dont have as much of a hard time getting the kids to bed at night...
Wonder why?
