Hi everyone

I just noticed the other day in my local pet shop,a collar designed for outdoor cats which is meant to stop cats catching birds.
It works by setting off an alarm and light as the cat pounces on a bird
Has anybody seen or used one of these? do they work?
I am not sure if these are available in the U.S. or anywhere else.
They just seem like a really good idea
Thanks
Lilicat

Hi

That is a really good point,I presumed the noise was to frighten the bird away, but maybe it is to frighten the cat! That changes things a lot!!
There was nothing on the instructions about the noise

I really don't like collars. I used to use them, but my friend told me about a missing cat when she was a youngster, and it was found in a shrub hanging by the collar. I've not used one since.

How would it discern the difference between play-pounces, regular jumps, and hunting movements?

At the kitty's beck and call
I've heard of them but never really researched them. I've never really needed to because my kitties creep so carefully across the lawn, then tear across clattering everything out of the way and giving the birdies ample opportunity to escape. They have to be the most inept hunters I know

You can get collars that will release if it gets caught on anything. I used to have one for Zebra because she used to get into everything when she was a kitten. I found that it worked pretty well.

Yes. They do make this kind of collar. They're usually called "break away collars" and they're designed to release if it gets caught on something.

Just wondering if they work for mice too,as my cat Lili brought in a live mouse a couple of months ago, which we finally managed to catch and then release outside alive and well, must admit, dont fancy the prospect on birds being brought home
Just wondered if the alarm might be going off a hundred times a day at home when Lili plays with her toys!

I've seen these collars often, but I'm not quite sure how effective they are! I don't think it would be helpful to prevent Lili from catching mice, as they are ground animals and they are just not quite as fast as a hunting cat!

Maybe you could contact them or search for a review to see what you can find about them!

Oh and welcome to another North Westerner!
