The stray momma cat that we took in was vomiting frequently. We took her to the vet, and they did some tests. They were guessing that her uterus was infected somehow, and they decided to do an emergency spay, which took place yesterday. Well, unfortunately, her uterus was fine and her lymph nodes were the size of a mango pit, the largest our vet has seen in a cat. They checked for feline leukemia again, and thankfully she did not have that. So, now they did a biopsy, and we are waiting for results. Our vet does not know what it can be. We just brought her home and we are supposed to give her antibiotics (amoxicilyn) twice a day. She eats hill's i/d canned food that the vet gave us. We also have three doses of pain medication to give her within the next couple of days. She is scheduled to see the vet again on tuesday. We also found out that the momma cat is 5.5 pounds! Our "original" cat, who is a year younger (a neutered male), is twice the weight.
We keep her in a separate room than her babies, so that the babies don't exhaust her. We have also started to give the babies softened dry food during momma's absence, and I would like to thank the person that suggested it on this forum because the babies are definitely eating it at a faster rate, and much easier. Luckily they don't show any sign of illness. Meanwhile the vet bill has risen to a thousand dollars so far, but its not like I can let the momma die. So, I stopped caring about money issues and I really hope she will be okay. Sometimes she moans as she is lying down and its just heartbreaking.
Did something like this happen to anyone else's momma cat? Not that I would wish it on anyone, but I feel so clueless about what is happenning to her. If I only knew what is wrong it seems as if things would be a little easier.

I also am sending positive vibes, and you are an angel for caring the way you are and doing what you are doing. Thank you.

You might want to consider adding wet food to the kittens' diet as well. I think the best thing is to get them used to the taste of both since an all dry food diet is not that good for cats down the road. Even with the water added (which makes it easier for them to eat) they are not getting the same kind of moisture in their system as they do with canned food.

What's considered the minimum is a diet of at least 1/2 canned and 1/2 dry.

You can give them the moisted dry 2 times a day, and perhaps the canned kitten food (you can find inexpensive ones at petsmart) once a day.

Once they are about 6 weeks old, you can start giving them the dry kitten food as is, and then the wet food once a day (or a little with each meal, your choice). But their diet is best with both.

Please let us know what they find. I am hoping it can be helped eaisily and is not cancerous or anything like that.

I'm sorry but I have no idea what is going on with your kitty! How sweet you are to be so generous with her vet care...that sure is a lot of money! She is lucky to have found such a loving home! Prayers that she starts feeling better real soon!
