Well, I am writing to you guys out of my sheer and utter misery.
I am covered in Poison Ivy, seriously, covered in it. Yesterday after leaving a work meeting with a friend, we were talking about how we used to be outside all the time climbing trees and getting bruised up as kids, and you see that less and less with children these days. While lamenting on the sorrows of that very fact, my friend points out a lovely tree from the car window and remarks on its climbing potential jokingly. Determined to be the goofball that I am and show her that one is never too old for tree climbing and childish exuberance, we pulled over and I kicked off my heels and went a climbin'. While my stupid point was thoroughly proven, my body is now covered in poision ivy to the point that I finally went to the ER today.

They said I have a systemic reaction and gave me a very expensive shot of corti-something. (I do not have health insurance). The doctor then prescribes me the steroids. I find out that the price for these is rather exorbitant, and when I called ahead, he only told me about the shot, that's why I went. I couldn't afford to be spending that much more on the steroids. So he tells me that the shot I just got is pointless then, because you shouldn't get one with out the other. I ask about any alternate medications and he tells me about Zanfel, which is an OTC drug and about $40, more in my price range thankfully! He tells me this actually works better than the shot or steroids because it binds the poison ivy immediately.
Seriously, this might have been valuable info to have BEFORE I spent money pointlessly! I know they have to make their money, but seriously, aren't they supposed to care about patients and try to meet their needs in the most cost efficient way? Gosh!

Anyhoo, I just got the Zanfel and am about to try it out. If any of you have used this or anything else, please let me know, as I have a feeling work is going to be miserable tomorrow spent in itchy discomfort.

I feel you pain. Try having it in your eye. My boyfriends dad got some on his hand then rubbed his eye and not looks like he has pink eye with a huge sty. Its poison ivy. Poor things!!!

Ouch! Poison Ivy is wicked. Years ago, a friend's son was downwind when a neighbor was burning some, and the poor kid got it inside his nostrils, mouth, and throat.
The one thing I remember working when I was a kid was something called "Ivy Dry". My mom used to make sure she always had a bottle in the medicine cabinet.

Oh yeah, and Calamine lotion. I had a plant reaction of some sort in grade school and had to go to school with that stuff all over me!

The Zanfel works well for many, But didn't for me. What did work was using Tecnu skin cleaner, followed by Calagel. both were very affordable. Good luck. I hope the Zanfel works.

Thanks for your condolences guys!

Karen-- I really hope it works for me. I just did the treatment and the itching is supposed to stop immediately, it hasn't stopped, only lessened a little. If this doesn't work, where can I get the the Technu?

Oh, and another question? Can I get it again from my sheets, pillows, couch, etc? Should I disinfect and wash everything? I will just to be cautious, but can it really spread that way?

Wow, a systemic reaction! Thats unpleasant. I'm not allergic to poison ivy, but I feel your pain.

The steroid shot was probably not totally pointless (fingers crossed!). I hope your medicine works for you.

Oh, and take a baking soda bath. That makes all the itchies go away!

Yes, I would wash everything to be safe. I would keep changing your bathroom towel near the sink also.

I found the technu at drugstores, supermarkets, and wal-mart.
Yes, I had it REAL bad last year.

Thanks guys! Karen how horrible you had it last year, I wouldn't wish this on anyone, I'm convinced it's purely evil!! Lol. Thanks for the info about Technu, it will be the next try if this doesn't work. Doc said to give this at least three days.

About washing everything, this is going to sound stupid, but when should I wash/disinfect the house? Now while I still have it?--I will just be re-infecting, won't I? Or should I wait, but then what if I get more? Lol! Ah, the cycle never ends. I even have this stuff on the palms of my hands, which I hear is pretty rare due to the thickness of the skin there.

When I do things, I do them up good, haha!!

The poison ivy rash comes from as oil from the plant-scratching spreads the oil and thus continues the problem. My sis last my got a severe case and got most likely a prescription steriod ointment. Her legs were terrible!! I concur on the Technu-I haven't used but its supposed to be great and fairly easy to find.
I would wash whatever clothes you had on seperately to remove the oil. Use warm/hot water.
You could also try making a paste with baking soda and water or an oatmeal bath too.
I've had poison oak in the past so I feel your pain!!

Aww, I feel for you, I get posion oak really bad!

Like GailC mentioned, you get it by coming in contact with the plants oils. You can't reinfect yourself by contact with sheets or from oozing blisters. You can get it from handling dirty clothes & touching a cat or dog that has been in contact with the plant.
