Have any of you ever had a cat and a guinea pig??

Im just wondering because today I seen in the pet store some baby guinea pigs, and I cant help but fall in love. And So I've decided I want one.

But Im afraid the kitties will want the guinea pig more than me. Can they get along? Or is an instinct for the cats to want to kill it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

(plus it's one of the reasons my DH says we cant have another pet, and I'm trying to prove him wrong)

Well, I have 2 cats and a guinea pig, and for 5 years they've gotten along fine. Mostly because he's in his cage most of the time
Or if I take him out, I make sure the cats aren't around (just in case) They've sniffed him before. I'm not actually sure if they'd get along if I put him on the floor and Sweetie or Precious was there. They mostly ignore him. At first they stared at the cage. Anyhoo... guinea pigs are really cute, I hope you can get one!!
They grow on you, too.
Good luck

I have a guinea pig and 2 cats. one cat HATES him, but the other cat LOVES him and they even snuggle together!! They play games and chase each each other......it's so cute!!!. but personally, i don't think you should be worrying about what the cats might do to the guinea pig, but what the guinea pig might do to the cats!! i've seen my piggy bite my kitties (not hard, just a little nibble) but the cats get scared!! (of course thats only when the cat tries to eat his Timothy Hay
) so basically it depends on what your cat is like, some cats love 'em, some cats hate 'em

heres some pictures of mine

Aawwww...those pics didnt work for me.

I sure hope I'm able to get one. They were just soooo cute and I totally bonded with one of them. He was doing that sqeaky sound when I talked, and was hoping around like a horse. Either he loves me too, Or he really hates me. lol. But I sure love him, he came up and was sniffing my hair. I love him!

Except the cages are so expensive.

It's nice to know they can get along fairly well. Going to go work on getting one.

I love guinea pigs too, and want to have one someday. They're pretty hardy which is good for having bigger animals here, but they don't live too long. But, as with all the other animals I've wanted throughout the years, I have, and will recommend anyone to, read up thoroughly on them first. They have very specific diet and environment requirements. I used to want a chinchilla, until I read about all the extra care they require! I'm not a huge "pocket pet" person in that aspect, I don't do cleaning of cages or tanks very well or happily, so those kinds of animals are better off not in my care! (As much as I love them!) I'll stick to cats and dogs!
Good luck, I hope you find a very informative book to teach you!

We had a guinea pig for about 2 years once, and he died. He was the sweetest thing ever. He always squeaked when the fridge would open, because he knew there were carrots in there.
Aaaww...I miss javon. That was his name. He had a cage, that I personally built myself...(I was so impressed) It was 2 stories high, with a ramp that he loved, and other cool things.

I sure hope one day I can have another one.

As a kid I had a guinea pig named Cutie-Purr. She was a spoiled little thing! Her tank was in the kitchen and she too would squeak every time the fridge opened.

Then one day mom came home from a buisness trip with cat! She had been doing research on something in a public library when Miko just strolled in and climbed up on her lap. Security guards came up to my mom and said they would handle the "pest." Mom asked just how they would handle it, and they said they'd take her to the pound and have her "disposed of." My mom said absolutely not. (Though, knowing my mom she said it in a way less polite manner!)

We got a top for the Pig's cage and would shoo Miko (the cat) away every time she jumped on it, thinking she was after some lunch. We were horribly worried when the cat started prying the top off. Until one day the entire family walked through the kitchen door to see the pig sitting on top of her little wooden hut and the cat sitting INSIDE the cage! They were sitting nose to nose actually PURRING at eachother!

From then on we just left the top off of the cage and Miko would hop in and out throughout the day just to visit Cutie-Purr. The guinea pig actually taught the cat that the fridge meant treats. So, then every time we opened the fridge Cutie-Purr demanded her veggies and the cat would start whining for her Pounce.

It was really a sweet relationship that sadly ended with the unexpected death of Cutie-Purr. (Nothing seemed wrong with her, just one morning Mom got up and she was gone.)

So yes, after this horribly long post, the final jist is: Yes, cats and guinea pigs can definately get along, and in fact can be great friends!

I know! And the worst thing is, instead of being upset, in my dream, all i can think about is that my mum is going to tell me "I told you so"!!

We've got a guniea pig boar and my cats really could care less about him. A couple of them are afraid of him, Muffi tries to sleep in his cage, and a couple of them love him. Mostly they just ignore him. Though cats are seen as rodent haters (by some), for the most part, they can learn to live with any animal. I've even had fish in an aquarium with an open top (betta since he's a surface breather) and my cats just watched him like a person watches TV. No big thing.

If you truely want a guinea, just make sure you realize that they really aren't a wash-n-go pet. To have a happy, healthy guinea pig, there's a lot of work involved including the supplementation of their diet with fruits and veggies, keeping a very social pig happy with human interaction, and just keeping him entertained. If you get him and need suggestions, feel free to PM me.
