I have a wonderful two going on 3 year old spayed female part Maine coon cat "Maggie."She has always been a people person cat. She loves LOVES to lick those people she is closest to...She licks mostly your face -kitty kisses, and hands and arms and sometimes anything that is exposed. I am wondering what the consensus is....is she really greeting those she licks, or is it more a bad weaning procedure. She is a pound cat too. She will also lick when the food dish is empty, but not so much when she wants out or something like that. Kitty ADHD? What do you all think?

he first thing a kitten experiences, even before it can see, is its mother licking and washing. Grooming is a demonstration of love and caring. So, if your cat washes your hair or licks your face, he is showing you his acceptance and caring of you...it's quite lovely.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but when my cat licks, he first of all bites and holds my hand down with his paws. I was wondering if that was also normal?

This happens when I pet my cats belly which he does not like. He licks it real quick and then bites down

My cat does this too. He seems to decide that we need to be cleaned, and then goes to great lengths to make sure we stay put. He nibbles while he licks too; we joke that he's trying to get fleas off of us. I think it's normal. Your cat just wants you to stay still for bath time.

Zakk gives a quick kiss at night sometimes when he is feeling very affectionate.
Rocky does it occ during the day, but sometimes in the middle of the night he will start kneading my hair and licking my face. I don't mind the face licking as much as the hair kneading b/c I end up with a HUGE knot in my hair, plus his claws hurt my scalp. Since I understand it's because he loves me I put up with it until it really starts driving me nuts!

Miki kneads my hair when I try and sleep. She'll sit on the pillow right above me and knead the pillow and my hair and the same time. She hasn't given me any kitty kisses yet, but she's still new and starting to bond with people.

She's bathing you! This is something indicates she loves you VERY much. Kitties do it to other kitties they love and adore. Our two litter siblings bath each other ALL the time. In fact, our boy Hobbes was just bathing our girl Sunny while she was trying to drink her water! It's just a kitty's way to say, "I love you".
Enjoy!

hello..kinda on topic, kinda not...my kitten, spike, will do the same thing to me at night before i go to sleep, only he will do that to my nose and ears. he wakes me up the same way, licking and biting my face, purring loud as can be in my ears. he is only that way with me, not my roommates..is that normal for him to only show his affection to me? he is 4 months old and we have had him for a month. he won't even sit on their laps.

Oh definitey. Kitties choose their mamas, and it sounds like he's chosen you! Our household pertains of me, my husband, our six year old daughter, two kitties and a rabbit. All animals (and obviously my daughter) acknowledge that I am Mommy, and the animals have always been more comfortable with me than my husband or my daughter. The kitties have warmed up to my husband and my daughter, but they definitely treat me like Mama. Maisie won't really let anyone but me pet her. My husband's succeeded a couple times, but it was short-lived.

Yep, animals pick their mama...

My cats all lick us from one time to another, but my bottle baby is named "Smoochie" for a reason!
Oh, and my latest bottle baby (7 wks old) gave me kisses for the first time yesterday!

To Spikes mom-Did you bring him home? Are you the one who wakes up and pays attention to him, or gets up to feed him when he does it? Are you there the most? It may just be (ahem
)that he likes you the best!

If my cats come and love on us in the bed in the morning, it is usually because they ate all the food- the giveaway is if it is more than one cat
!

thank you...i was wondering if that was the case. i read somewhere that kittens do that if they are taken from their 4-legged mama's too soon, but i thought with his age, he wouldn't do that. i love that he is that affectionate with me, as he is my kitten, but he is like a human baby, waking me up every couple of hours to be pet. i think its adorable, but at the same time i would like some sleep.

What works with my cat (who gets on my pillow, kneads (pulls) my hair, purrs and sticks her wet nose in my ear, puts her fuzzy white hiney in my face and lays on my head and licks my face
) is I pull the sheet over my head and tell her to go away (Usually preceeded by "Ugh, Butterbean!"), and ignore her. she's learned that's that and she still loves me
.
